Moving Costs and truck price haggling
« on: March 30, 2019, 02:45:22 AM »
Hi all. My wife and I are moving to Fort Collins, Colorado from Maryland. It’s about 1700 miles. We don’t have a ton of stuff but aren’t willing to part with some larger items so we’ve been looking into driving a moving truck. (15-16 feet). So far we’ve been haggling between Penske and Uhaul.

Our original quote from Uhaul was $2700.00 which I thought was way too high and can’t imagine anyone paying. But they promote being able to beat anyone else’s offer by 10%. We have cycled between getting a quote from Penske, returning to Uhaul where they lower their quote, returning to Penske to match, returning to Uhaul...etc. We’ve done this 4 times so far and each time they beat the previous price. It’s now down to $1,350.00 for the truck. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I plan to continue to pursue the lowest price. I was just surprised how inflated these initial quotes seemed to be.

Is this the truck itself or uhaul moving the entire thing?  I've never seen uhaul say they will beat anyone.

Just for the truck itself for 2200 miles.

I had a very similar experience about 24 years ago.  Also for a rental truck for a one way interstate move.  I think it was also between UHaul and Penske.  Eventually what happened is that one of the two cried uncle and said they couldn't match or beat the other's price, so I went back to the other place and took that last offer.  Pretty sure it was UHaul in my case, but it probably just depends on who needs the business more for that truck size and that destination.

How big is the truck?  Those numbers are in the neighborhood for a move I did from Detroit to Houston in a 26'.  Rather than your haggling adventure, Penske had a deal through AAA.  I got about to where you are, but no rounds of haggling.  As @Gin1984 said, Uhaul was not interested in matching the price.

The Uhaul store employee informed us that they would beat any offer from a different company by 10%. They now say they will do that if we show them the other quote on moving day to prevent the back and forth haggling. Thank you guys for your responses.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
