I recently got married and plan on moving out of state in the next 6-12 months. I currently live in New York and will be moving to North Carolina. My issue is this:
1) Do I come clean to my current company and see if they'll let me work remotely from North Carolina?
OR
2) Find a new job in North Carolina, tell my company I'm leaving and give my two weeks?
I'm torn because I will not be able to get the same salary I have now in NC, so trying to get my company to let me work remote would be ideal. Working remote is a benefit in itself on top of the NY salary in NC. On the other hand I'm worried if I tell them I plan on moving, they'll just dump me because they do not think I'm in it for the long haul and replace me.
I work as an electrical engineer for a small (15 person) company. My job requires some field time, but 90% of my time the last year has been spent in the office. I work from home occasionally from now with zero issues. Looking for opinions or insight one way or the other from you guys.. maybe you see another angle I'm missing. Thanks!

If you're afraid they're going to dump you, don't tell them until you're ready to move. And look for a job in NC, too. When you have a job offer, tell your current place of work that you're moving and want to work from home. If they don't let you, take the NC job. That way you're not promising anything to anyone but you have all of your bases covered.

Yep, look for a job in NC, wait until you have your move finalize and then "surprise" your employer with a polite ultimatum: let me work remote or I'm giving notice.

Thank you both for your input. I like the idea of having my bases covered.. if it ends up going down that way it makes me look like a bit of an asshole with the ultimatum though, no?

I wouldn't think so. Make sure to frame it by saying your really like your job, you'd like to keep it, etc.

Are you female? Because we worry so much about looking like an asshole.
It's not an "ultimatum", really, is it? I mean, that's not how you present it. You don't present it as "let me work remotely or else".
You present it as "I'm moving out of state. I'd be happy to continue working for you remotely, if you are interested."

Great advice and a wonderful way to phrase it. I'd add "I have a job offer in North Carolina, but I would prefer to keep my position here if we can make it work."

I'm planning to do this exact thing at some (unknown) point in the future. I like my job but could do it from home and DH really wants to move out of this HCOLA. Let us know how it goes for you!
