Health Insurance Help
« on: June 24, 2017, 09:02:52 AM »
Hello Mustachians,

I've recently made a pretty big life change in the fact that I'm starting a new job. I'll start off by telling you a little about my situation. I live in Michigan with my boyfriend. We bought a house last year for 70k we've been paying it off pretty aggressively. We're down to owing 52k. We put down 10k initially and our monthly payment is $475.00 and we've been paying 1k on it each month. Any extra money I have I put in Vanguard. Since February I put in 7.5k it's gained me about $225 dollars so far.

More about my job. I have been working at a family owned grocery store in the next town over. Which is about 15 minutes away. I've been there about 6 and a half years and I make $10.50 an hour. (After taxes it's about $8.08 an hour.) My boyfriend works right here in town and he can ride his bike when he decides to. He makes minimum wage. So the new job I've got is right here in town as well. It starts off at $9.25 and after a three month training period it should go up. This new job is at a business that rents out rooms, has a grill, a salon, a clothing store, etc. I'll be working as a receptionist at the hotel, salon, etc. I'm actually pretty excited about it. It'll start off part time but they said by fall time some people will be quitting. I just feel I have a better chance for advancement at a place like this compared to where I'm working now. I'll keep working at the grocery store as their only cake decorator for two days out of the week.

So if you're still with me: My only concern with this new job is that they don't offer health insurance even at full time. My old job does have health insurance, but I'd have to be full time there. I'm able to use my parents health insurance until November so I have some time to figure it out. I also don't have any health conditions. My question is does anyone have any recommendations of where to start looking for health insurance? I read the MMM article on it but was hoping for your guy's point of view. Thank you for any help!

Hey Mag,

Congratulations on the new job, and for being excited about it... That is a nice way to start, and with a great attitude.  Also congratulations on paying down your home, and putting the extra $$$ into Vanguard.  Very smart.  As for insurance, how did the numbers look when you ran various ACA plans?  If not, the link below will take you there.

I would think with your low age, and financial situation, you are in the sweet spot with regard to premiums...  I sure wish I was.  Good luck.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
