Most Mustachian-Friendly City
« on: February 13, 2015, 06:45:37 AM »
Any opinions on the best city?

I'm an avid outdoorsmen (hunting, hiking, dog training, fishing, kayaking). I enjoy low cost of living with high salaries (who doesn't?). Walk and Bike friendly? Yes, please.

Please advise!

Houston is increasingly walkable/bikable and is suffused with excellent kayaking according to some family friends that go kayaking, frequently within city limits, every weekend. Oil prices have hit the upstream businesses somewhat but downstream loves the low prices.

I wouldn't necessarily look for a "city".  I might look for a college town (preferably a small liberal arts college with a large endowment or an R1 university) in a part of the country you like.  Colleges often have well-paying jobs, and college towns are often bike/walk friendly.  Many other advantages too.

I don't live there, but sounds like Austin, TX might work. There motto is "Keep Austin Weird". I also believe it's the "Live Music Capital" of Texas. Because it's in the Hill Country, there are some great hiking spots and lots of deer hunting close by. There are some beautiful lakes for fishing. Also, NO STATE INCOME TAX!

Minneapolis might fit the bill.

Great job market if you're educated. #1 in fortune 500 companies per capita in the US. Relatively low COL. #1 parks system in the US. #1 city in the US for biking.  Fittest city in the US.

Minnesota was recently ranked the best state to live in by Politico Magazine based on a number of economic factors. Was ranked 3rd best state to make a living in by Forbes.

Lots of outdoor opportunities in the city, with world class hunting and fishing within a 5 hour drive. Minneapolis was rated the 3rd best city to live in for outdoors enthusiasts, and nearby Duluth was rated 1st.

Of course you have to be able to embrace the cold :)

Whitewater, flat water, or sea kayaking? You can have all three in Washington.

If you are die hard whitewater then go for the south, north carolina, tennessee...

What do you like to fish for? Lake fishing? Ocean? Fly? Fly fishing then you need to be in the west.

Austinite here, responding to the votes for Austin -- Austin's pretty great, but the news of the greatness has spread and now growth is crazy and real estate is tight. A central Austin home is a great investment ... if you can afford it. (Central Austin bungalows under 1000 ft2 are upwards of $350K.) Property taxes are another issue -- quite high since there is no state income tax or local tax.

Tons of arts & culture & food & DIY culture. Not sure I'd recommend it for outdoorsy stuff, though ... water is a problem, the lakes are low (if that's your thing, and it sounds like it is). No mountains. Certainly plenty of fitnessy stuff going out -- both indoors and outdoors. Culture of fitness, lots of running & cycling going on. Feasible to be a transportation cyclist here (I've done it for 7 years), but it's no Portland in terms of cycling/transit infrastructure.

What else? Access to places outside of Texas is tough -- takes a day to drive out of Texas (and then where have you gone?).

All that said, my partner and I are living here as homeowners and managing a 70% savings rate, despite being at the beginning of a 30-year mortgage and therefore having to count a lot of interest on the expenses side of the balance sheet. We'll sit tight until FIRE, then reassess. Many great things about Austin and we have a great community here, as well as a great investment in our Central Austin home, but we are far from family and also concerned about climate future here.

Washington seems like a good choice, especially if you live close to the Oregon border. No state income tax and if you shop in Oregon, no sales tax. Pretty good place to be. Oh, and great fishing up there too so I hear :) Which reminds me, I need to hit the water again

Do not ever attempt to drive here during rush hour, school quality varies a lot.
