Men's peacoat: Black or Navy Blue?
« on: January 18, 2021, 06:19:13 AM »
I'm a man and trying to decide on the colour of a peacoat. I want the best colour that is, classic, versatile and goes with almost anything. For example, would navy peacoat go with blue jeans and black shoes?

What colour would you guys get, or have already got?

A blue peacoat is the classic color.  In the Navy it's worn with black patent leather shoes and navy dress (or 'cracker-jack' whites), works just as well with blue jeans.

Having said that, my Peacoat is charcoal grey...

I’d say navy as well. I have my grandfather’s from his service time that I sometimes wear, but the one that I bought for myself and wear most often is charcoal like the above poster’s.

Navy, hands down. I typically prefer colors to black, unless I'm going to heavily accessorize.

Navy for sure (or charcoal if that is an option). I'm not a fan of black - kinda boring.

Though I would say that the navy will look better with brown shoes than black...but still ok with black.

I'm going to disagree with everyone and say go with black.  But that's largely because all of the accessories that I own are black - hat, gloves, boots, shoes . . . so it co-ordinates better.

Depends on your skin tone & eye color. I'd go for which ever I look best in.

+1, from another member of the everything-I-have-is-black-because-it's-easier club

For OP though, this is great advice:

Depends on your skin tone & eye color. I'd go for which ever I look best in.

Depends on what your style is.

I personally don't like navy pea coats, but that's just because I worked in menswear in the 90s, so I sold A LOT of Navy pea coats to Hugh Grant wannabes.

Go with what works for you. Whatever you like.

+2

Also what works with the rest of your wardrobe.

And how you would like to be perceived. I think blue makes the wearer more approachable while black can create distance.

As someone who loves colour in all things, I just find black dreary and depressing.  I hate to look at it and most people just don’t look very good in it.  It’s okay for formal occasions but I like to see more variety in daily wear.  Especially in younger people.  That’s my preference.

Everyone is entitled to their taste and their opinion.

Personally, I've been wearing mostly all black for 24 years because I truly find it the most flattering on me and suiting to my personality. For formal events, I normally wear intense jewel tones.

To each their own.

My thinking on the matter was always . . . literally every character in the Matrix can't be wrong!

For formal occasions I wear my dress leathers.

Navy or charcoal, but for a slightly different reason than the above, the black wool shows EVERY spec of lint/dust/dandruff.
