So thinking of doing this for a part-job when I retired from my day job. From what I have gathered, I can do this remotely with a phone line and pay averages about $20/hr. any pro's/con's? Also wondering if anyone on the boards has experience regarding the certifications and costs involved. It seems there are a few online courses to learn the technical jargon for the specific language but they don't seem to list the price for the course which makes it seem sketchy.

I'm interested in this too. I've been wondering about doing it as a side gig thing after I get home from work. A medical student friend of mine encouraged me to look into it after complaining that some of the interpreters she got on the phone were terrible. They offer in person classes in my city. I looked into it a while back and then back burnered it so I'm fuzzy on the details. I think it was a full week of 8 hr/day classes for around $500-600.

My roommate does this. He's from Pakistan and translates Urdu (I think that's how it's spelled).
At least with the place he works for, you only get paid for the time he's actually on the phone with people.
Some days he gets lots of calls, and sometimes not. Also, a call may be 2 minutes or 2 hours. His pay is something like $0.50/min (not sure exactly), but it can be hard to predict.
My sister did in-person medical interpreting for a hospital (Spanish-English). That seemed more regular.

So is your roommate obligated to be available for a set number of hours and only gets paid if he takes a call? Is there a base rate for being available during those hours if no calls come in?
