Title: MBA - Worth it?
Post by: LearningMustachian72 on July 03, 2018, 02:39:11 PM
Hey!

I work in IT Audit and honestly, while I make decent money, I do not find it at all fulfilling.

I am considering doing a full-time MBA in order to pivot to more of a finance/strategy role and ideally it would be a positive ROI.  Side note, I am 30 years of age.

Any suggestions on whether or not this would be worth it?

Thank you!

I feel for you because I had some interviews for IT Audit and it sounded hella boring. If you get a full scholarship to a school that is known for their alumni network it is more likely to be worth it, but you don't give enough details for me to say.

full time not worth it at 30, IMO. Can you do part time that your company pays for?

Sounds like your question is, "Will an MBA get me a job that I find fulfilling?"

I think you will have to define what is fulfilling to you. I don't think an MBA is required to find a fulfilling job. I don't think an MBA guarantees a fulfilling job.

IMHO, I would definitely not quit my job to pursue an MBA, nor would I borrow money for it.  Whether it will deliver you from your boredom in IT audit to something more forfilling is questionable.

Can you get your current employer or a new employer to pay you tuition reimbursement?  Best route.

Unless you are at a top school, I don't think a full time MBA is worth it. Especially not after 30.

Find an executive or professional program you can make great connections in and keep working while doing. Bonus points if your employer will pay.

/Just started a professional program, the executive program would not be fully paid for by my employer even though it would be faster.
