Max HSA & 401k, or not?
« on: April 09, 2019, 09:15:10 AM »
Hello.

I work at a company that gives me 15% bonus paid quarterly.  I assume this is off of my base salary... Will maxing HSA & 401k lower my base, making my 15% less valuable?  Is it worth not maxing those out to get the max bonus?

Thank you!

edit:  I'm making $85k + 15%... I do have the option of doing a roth 401k...

You should ask HR, as I doubt any of us can answer for certain.

But I would be shocked if contributing to your 401k reduced your bonus.

your bonus has nothing to do with your AGI-  your company would always base the bonus off your gross stated salary
Definitely benefits you to Max out your 401k (from my calculation with your 15% bonus) - you should contribute about 19-20% per pay period.
