Title: Mastercard and online gambling fraud
Post by: Heckler on April 28, 2017, 12:35:28 AM
Thanks to my OCD checking the balances of all my accounts, I noticed and reported 5 x $1000 online gambling cash advances on my credit card the day after it happened.   Customer service already had a fraud alert on my card and replaced my card.  She told me the fraud department will be in touch and not to worry about it. I have never online gambled.

What has been your experience with illicit credit card charges racked up?

In my experience, the credit card company will painlessly handle it 100% of the time.

I haven't had any fraudulent charges but I did have my bank contact me over an unusual purchase I made. I bought a gift for someone at a tobacconist and they called me to confirm it. I thought that was pretty good service.

I sure hope so.   Thx!

Makes me wonder if the criminal actually gets paid or not.

I've had it happen a few times on different cards. They remove it within a day or two and you never have to deal with it again.

No worries.

Same as everyone else. Had a few hacked charges on my cards over the years. CC company usually sees it first before I do. Always a simple call has taken care of it.

Side note: This is one reason I never use a debit card for online purchases. Don't even like to use them for in person purchases. I've heard not so nice stories about banks making people jump through hoops to get their money back. Not sure if this has gotten any better over the last few years or not.

Agreed.  First time my debit card was hacked it was for less than $100 (thank God). But it took 2-3 weeks to get my money back, and that was with no hoops to jump through.  I've never used my debit card again.

This is the reason why it's always best to use a credit card rather than a debit card. If it was a debit card, you'd have to wait for the fraud investigation to be handled before getting access to your money. Since it's a credit card, you don't have to do anything and it is 100% only an issue for the bank - it doesn't affect you at all except you have to wait for a new card in the mail

EDIT: didn't realize a couple people had responded with the same thing, sorry

No problem Cptcool!  The more voices, the better I feel about my $8k credit card in Mint.

Before the Durbin amendment to the Dodd-Frank act interchange fees on debit cards averaged 44 cents a transaction source. (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2013/07/31/judge-strikes-cap-debit-swipe-fees/2603299/) In a post great recession world with interchange fees capped financial institutions have been looking to generate fee revenue from other product lines. I find it interesting how effective the marketing campaigns driving consumers to credit from debit have been over the last few years.

has happened to my debt card 4 times and credit card twice in 15 years.

Same thing always happens, they ask/you tell, which charges are not yours. Your sign a paper, or recently i been able to do it over the phone and verify which charges.

Everything is refunded in 1-3 days, i think debt card took longer to refund

Most time it ever took was about 10mins in person.....

So, the $5k was revered, as well as the interest and cash advance fees.

In addition, MasterCard gave me an extra $10k credit!   I laughed when I looked at my +6500cr balance today.   Another half hour on the phone fixed that - should be back to $0 now.

Thanks all!
