Moving truck rental advice; insurance...
« on: October 01, 2014, 07:53:04 PM »
I have USAA auto insurance, and for the last 24 years I have moved using U-Haul, Penske, etc, they have told me any vehicle I rent that has a "real" frame, can not be fully insured with the same coverage my vehicles have.  Called them tonight, and was told this has changed...  She said it used to be that way, but now they will treat it just like your own vehicles...  WRONG, and my gut was right!  I got this follow-up email:

"Your Automobile Policy Contract extends liability coverage for Use of any vehicle that is not your covered auto if it is a Moving Van for personal use regardless of load capacity.  Physical damage coverage is NOT extended to moving vans from the Auto Policy and is the responsibility of the named insured. "

So what do you all do in the the rental truck game concerning coverage?...  I hate the scammy feeling of the loss of use crap, full payment on the spot if you total the truck, "safe move" etc.  Thanks for your help.

P.S.  In my experience, USAA service/value/competency has fallen off a cliff in the last decade or so...  It was unreal how good they were in the late 80's through later 90's.

Just went through the research on this over the summer. Contacted my insurance, and the rental truck was covered. I did not get the rental insurance. Did note that damage to the rental or property through carelessness - like trying to drive under an overpass/bridge that didn't have enough clearance might not be covered (can't remember the exact reason) so I made sure to check the truck height and note down the clearances on the route.

Confirm with your insurance is my suggestion.
