Should I cancel my Alaska cruise?
« on: February 27, 2020, 06:02:50 AM »
Planning an Alaskan cruise out of SFO for this July.  My mother is flying out from Australia to join me and my two teens.  She is a 73 year old diabetic cancer survivor which pushes her risk factors for coronavirus way high.

Currently I am only in the hole for $600 (which I might get back with insurance).  The balance of $4300 is due at the end of March and I need to make a decision.

Thinking of cancelling the cruise and just doing something like driving to Yellowstone instead.

Could not pay me to be stuck on a boat during this madness. Abort! Abort! Abort!

Fly to Hawaii or Montreal.

If you still have time, perhaps wait a bit longer to see how things play out...?  A lot can happen in 4 weeks before your balance is due for the trip.

I have a cruise planned in October. I'm looking forward to it very much. No way I would cancel it.

It might be a good time to visit Yellowstone this year if the Chinese bus tourists are forced to cancel their trips.  Less crowding at some of the roadside attractions.  (Though certainly bad news for the tourist industry in gateway cities.)

Just to add, it’s probably unlikely that you would be able to claim your $600 from insurance. Alaska is nowhere near on an Australian Govt “Do Not Travel” list.

Having said that, I don’t think I’d be thrilled with the idea of getting on a cruise until this is all resolved.  $600 would be well worth forfeiting if it were me, especially if you are coming up to having to pay the next chunk of money.

You'd have to be crazy to go.  One person on a cruise can quarantine the whole ship and a lot of ports aren't even letting cruises dock.

Your mom shouldn’t be flying or on a cruise with all her health conditions. We will likely eat 1200 for our flight in August.

Do you want to risk being be locked on a cruise ship in your cabin for weeks if there is a coronavirus outbreak?
