I just bought a leather sofa and loveseat from Macys.  The rep tried selling me on their Worry-No-More Protection Plan.  Its $395 and she says it covers everything from cat scratches, spills you name it.  I declined and she said if I change my mind I can add it on within 3 days of delivery.  Its a $3,000 loveseat+sofa and I've been considering the protection plan since I have a cat and a newborn.  I googled the protection plan and read nothing but absolutely terrible reviews from multiple people for having their claims denied, mostly because they didnt file their claim within 10 days of the occurence.  No one has left a somewhat positive review of the protection plan which makes me think I should just decline the plan and try to keep the cat off it.  Does anyone have experience with leather furniture and cats/babies?  Macy's Worry-No-More Protection Plan?

You have a cat and a soon to be toddler and you bought a $3000 leather furniture set?

I'm sorry. This is extremely conspicuous.

Leather makes a good sofa furniture material for kids because its durable and easy to clean.  Its not great around cats though and I do have concerns, but as far as cats go I have about as obedient of a specimen as they come.  That said, he is a cat.

We bought leather furniture when our children were babies.  Total mistake.  It will not keep clean with children of any age no matter what kind of leather cleaning protection you put on it.  It's durable for sure, but has never looked clean over the years.  If any liquid is spilled/gets on it, it just absorbs into the leather.  My best advice for leather furniture is to place it where there is no sunshine hitting it, as that will do the most damage over the years.

We bought a used leather couch off craigslist for $300. Originally several thousand dollars. Came from a house with a cat. We had the cushions restuffed for $100. My 2-yo sits on it when eating crumbly snacks and spilling his milk-filled sippy cup. If you are okay with rehabbing furniture with a little kitty dander you can find deals on craigslist. You have at least a $2000 opportunity cost here.

I'm just saying this is a MMM forum and you bought furniture from (sucka consumer) Macy's. I'm sorry to be troll-ish.

The protection policy is probably not worth it as you have read.

Do you trim the cat's nails? It can make a huge difference. With regular trims, you can keep the nails down to nubs. Even if you cat doesn't use it as a scratching post, beware of punctures from the back feet when they are jumping off.

No experience with Macy's - but life's lessons have been that protection plans are utter crocks of shit.

alright I feel like I have to chime in here.
10 years ago we bought a very nice leather sectional from (gasp) Macy's. We were having a hard time finding something that fit our basement family room. We searched used first and couldn't find anything that would fit down the steps. So we waited for a sale and ponied up the $2k. That and our mattress are the only thing we have ever bought new.
Let me tell you, it has been the best piece of furniture ever. The leather is very, very thick and durable. We got a kit to clean it and do that twice a year. It's held up to every day wear of a family with two kids no problem. We plan to keep it at least another 10 years. Maybe longer.
Sometimes you get what you pay for and the cheapest option isn't really the best option.
I can't speak for pets, with two kids I've got enough animals in the house.
I wouldn't do the protection plan though.

We bought a beautiful set of leather furniture from Macy's and it lasted 20 years with 2 cats and 2 kids.  Did it always look brand new?  No.  But it always looked nice.  I did not get the warranty - I just got a leather care kit for Mercedes cars (I cannot remember now why - except I think somebody told me it was the best and would do the best job).  I used  it to clean and condition the leather as often as I could make time to do it.  The conditioner tended to render the cat scratches (and you will get them - we had wonderfully behaved cats too) less visible and revive the leather to new looking.  We only got rid of the set after we just wanted a new look in the room and hunter green wasn't it anymore.  Loved the set - and so did everyone else.

Ok, so different perspectives here. I appreciate the above posts about leather conditioner. I'll have to look into that.

I wouldn't do the protection plan.  Years ago we had bought a couch from Macy's and got the plan only to discover they try to find a way to weasel out of everything.  Chances are they will find a way to deny any claim.  And if you don't use it, it's difficult to actually get the money back at the end of the term.

Cat's claws are tough on leather so I'll exclude that item from my comment -

We have a 3 year old macy's leather couch.  Looks new.

Needed another couch, went back to macy's yesterday.  Said no the plan.

Other than the cat's claws (which can destroy any furniture), I wouldn't even think about getting the warranty.  Leather cleans up easily and holds up well.

We bought a sofa from macy's with the protection plan.  Then we got a dog.  A dog who decided that clandestine peeing on the sofa was a good idea.  Believe it or not, the dog peeing on the sofa was covered.  They sent a guy out to clean it and when he said he couldn't get all of the pee out, they initiated the claim.  We basically got the full initial value of the sofa (less the worry-no-more warranty fee) as a credit to another sofa.

So maybe buying new isn't moustachian, and maybe buying new from macy's is even worse, but the the warranty coverage is legit.
