Lowest internet speed I could get?
« on: May 20, 2014, 03:49:19 PM »
Hi, my in-laws just moved out of the house we're living in, and now we're taking over the bills. They used to have cable/land line telephone/fast internet, but we're just going to have internet. Our service for the past few years has been 25 Mbps, but I'm not sure we need that. What have Mustachians discovered is a good internet speed to get if we stream movies/TV shows/basketball games once in a while? Other than that, we don't have much high bandwidth use--just email/blogging/casual surfing/social networking, etc.

Also, if you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, do you have a preference for your service provider? Who gives good deals?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

These are actually a few talking points covered in the guide. 3Mbps is plenty, some can even get by on 1.5Mbps if you're not trying to run multiple video streams and VoIP service at the same time. Bakari's helped highlight a few Bay area deals.

3Mbps would be plenty if I could get it consistently!

Live in S. Bay; have Comcast.  Hate them.  Hopefully San Jose gets its butt in gear and does everything required and Google Fiber comes in the next few years [decade].

The 2 of us do fine on 1.0 Mib/s, but you can only stream 1 video at a time.  Otherwise we can both run with only minimal interference to each other.

I recently moved from an area where I had cable access at 25-30Mbps to one where my best option was ADSL2+ at somewhere between 3 and 3.5Mbps depending on the time of day.

There are some websites I visit where I've noticed a slight drop in load speed, but it's not unusable. Videos etc. take a bit longer to load, but again, not really majorly. All in all I'm more than happy with the speed, and the halving of my monthly payment is definitely worth it.

I'm currently on 15/1 DSL and pay $32 (Canadian) / mth.

I'm very satisified with the service.  Plenty enought speed for our needs, if I was uploading or doing a lot of web work I would go for like a 25/10 package but that is like $60/mth.

I also get 300GB mthnly usage which is plenty even with quite a lot of Netflix usage.
