We are close to ending cable TV but are not sure what is the best way to connect to the internet so our 3 year old can get some TV shows and I can use my home office.  My cable provider is Comcast - does anyone know if they offer an internet only deal or is there a better way of doing this transition?

Does your city offer a public wifi plan? They've started them in the metro areas here in MN and it seems like a good deal.

No offense but seriously - go to Comcast's website.

I've had a terrible time with Comcast.  All I want is a decent speed internet, but it is cheaper to have internet and cable. For six months.  Then they double it.  Six months later they triple it.  Then you can to get just internet and it's $60.  Unless you cancel all together, return their stuff, and call as a new customer 30 days later, where you get the inexpensive starter deal again.  It's such a game.

I did go on Comcast's website a few weeks ago and it was unclear whether you could easily move from Cable and Internet to Internet Only.  There was no clear pricing on it online and when I called, I was put on hold and then disconnected with no call back.  The Comcast route would be more convenient but I am expecting to get the run around (as mentioned above) so I'd be willing to explore AT&T, a wireless hotspot or some other provider for stand alone internet.  Right now, and unfortunately, we don't have free municipal wifi in my area.

Comcast will cancel your cable and raise your internet $10 or $15, I don't remember.

I just did it. It was going to be $64 a month I think. It was a short and painless call.

Then when I went to the local office to return equipment the clerk got me $19 for six months, then thirty something for a while, then regular price of $54.

You can cancel in person, I think. Just go in and talk to them. They're near Church and Mattis in Champaign.

Just realized "prof" and the zip code, are you UIUC faculty?

You should talk to the University, there may be a negotiated plan for home broadband for faculty and staff with someone.

I am a Comcast customer and cancelled my bundle package over 2 years ago to go to an internet only package.  I am currently on the lowest and slowest plan, although I have noticed no speed issue since I left the fastest plan they had.  I currently pay $57 (taxes and BS fees included) a month for just the Internet.  Honestly, I feel it is a ripoff, but I also need Internet.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
