Looks like I need a FIRE-friendly tax/financial advisor...
« on: October 14, 2019, 01:28:47 PM »
So, I've been happily FIREing away for some years now, drawing between $24,000 and $36,000 annually and enjoying life. Not feeling constrained in the slightest, and able to take on long-term projects that are more personally satisfying than professionally lucrative. All good.

However, as part of a divorce settlement (thankfully, amicable), I've been awarded half of my ex-wife's corporate retirement accounts, including a pension and a 401k. I'm not of retirement age, but because these asserts were divided according to a QDRO court order, they're immediately accessible; I don't have to wait until I'm 59 and a half.

I need to be intelligent about transferring and managing these assets, and it's feeling outside of my DIY skill set. A large bloc of the 401k stock is in a company I don't feel comfortable holding, so I'd want to divest even if I have no short-term spending needs. The portfolio has tranches of stock with varying cost basis, so tax optimization should probably be part of the picture. Additionally, I'd prefer not to disqualify myself from my ACA health insurance, which my low income keeps at an affordable level.

Plus there's the pension, which unlike the 401k won't continue to grow if I let it ride. I need to elect a distribution, either for a lump sum or an annuity (lump sum. right?), and plugged into the overall picture.

In sum, a lot of moving parts. Time to consult a professional.

Can anyone recommend a FIRE-friendly consultant who'll help me tackle this, for an hourly fee? Preferably someone in the San Francisco Bay Area, although this can probably also be done remotely if someone elsewhere is the right fit. I don't want to sit through hours of a standard-issue "advisor" trying to sell me on their in-house financial products, and I don't need to have my frugality and lifestyle choices questioned. I want to assimilate these resources into what's already working for me, and proceed full steam ahead.

Your recommendations, here or in DMs, would be most welcome. Thanks.

Do NOT assume lump sum is better than annuity for the pension. You need to do the math.

Oh, I won't, thanks. I know there's no blanket answer, which is why I'm looking for help.

Just a note:  trading *within* the 401k won't be taxable--no worries about your income, or about cost basis.  Taking money out of a 401k is taxable, as income--again, no cost basis, as there is no capital gain.

Managing your 401k distributions around ACA is definitely something to work through.

For recommendation, they won't be necessary FIRE-oriented, but I would look at a member of the Garrett Planning Network.
Membership in the network requires a fee-only structure; some still charge a percentage for portfolio management, but you should be able to find a flat-fee or hourly-based planner who will learn about your goals, set up a plan to meet them, and help  *you* execute it.  (meaning, teach you to fish)

There are several CPAs in the forums.  Two that come to mind are CPA Cat and Cheddar Stacker.

Consulting a professional may be helpful, but you will need to bring them information about these accounts, especially the pension. Minimize your fees by bringing all documentation.

Re ACA, the factors you describe might lead to a very good outcome, depending on the account details. I am FIREd with a small pension that comes in the future, plus an account (inherited, some tens of thousands) that was very helpful because it was readily accessible, similar to how you describe the financial accounts you received from the QDRO. Fwiw, my ACA worked best by delaying the pension until later, and adjusting the current withdrawals to minimize ACA-related income to be just over the minimum. The flexibility you have could be very valuable, so don't be in a rush to liquidate any of the accounts you are receiving. Keep learning until you know to get the maximum utility from these important resources!

Best wishes.
