Looking for dental insurance (Texas)
« on: September 27, 2023, 05:28:01 PM »
Anyone recommend a dental insurance provider in Texas?

Turns out I grind my teeth in my sleep.  I've been wearing a dental guard at night.   Dentist notes that "sooner or later" I'm going to need to cap ALL of my upper teeth.  About 14k of work.  Want to find good dental insurance now.  Any recommendations?

I don't know if it's so much a recommendation, as it's what I did.

Our dentist has a discount plan, which for one price covered regular work for a fixed price, and offered a % off anything else.  It wasn't insurance, but was some blunting of costs.

We went to Guardian Direct for 2023, because we switched ACA insurers (Oscar to Community Health Choice) and lost coverage for my son's dental care through that.

Otherwise, it was six of one, half dozen of the other in terms of costs.

The downside of Guardian is that they have a 6 month waiting period for coverage on routine, and 12 month for other services.  So in essence, you are pre-paying a good amount of care.  It worked out for us because we had started the dentist's plan in August, so there was a minimal overlap of coverage.

So far, Guardian has worked pretty smoothly for us.  I did have a new crown this year, but that was under the dentist's plan.  I am working on a missed premium payment.  (they cashed my check; it wasn't credited to me.  And I have the late notices coming in)  That's been going on for a month, so we'll see how that goes.  But I take medical billing as a beast no matter what the option.  I've had no problems of communication or billing between my dentist and Guardian.
