Looking for cheap groceries in Washington DC
« on: July 16, 2012, 05:11:58 PM »
Hi,

I have been an avid MMM reader since beginning of this year. I live in the Netherlands and am currently on holiday in the US, and am a bit shocked by the prices for groceries here. 4,99$ for a loaf of bread? I visited two supermarkets: Whole Foods and Safeways, and though the last was cheaper than the first, I thought they were both pretty expensive. So, am I looking in the wrong shops? Were to go for groceries in Washington DC?

Thanx a lot!

Greetings, Hanne.

I live in maryland - right outside of DC.

There really is a big difference in food costs based on which area you are in. Of course having a car can impact that too. I haven't ever lived in DC but understand lots of people don't have cars because the transportation options are many (metro, buses, biking, walking, etc).

My favorite store of all is Save-A-Lot and then my next favorite is the latino supermarket. I have found the best prices at these two options. I don't know what part of DC you are in but you might try goggling ethnic supermarkets.
