Looking for an Apartment in San Diego
« on: April 06, 2015, 11:36:09 AM »
Hello all,

My names Robert.  I'm a long time lurker her and I'm about to move to San Diego with my wife.  We have lived in a lot of different places and feel that San Diego will be a great fit for us(Weather, largish metro area, fairly diverse, etc...) Do any of our San Diego area, moustachioed brethren know of any available rentals or have any advice on good apartment communities (fair pricing and clean)/ land lords?

We are looking for a 1b/1ba in walkable/bikeable neighborhoods fairly close to downtown.  I've been looking (Craigslist, hotpads, apartments.com...) at the neighborhoods around Balboa Park and see a limited number of options, but thought I'd check here for some local advice.  I would also love some advice as to whether i should be looking in different neighborhoods.

Thanks for any and all suggestions

My brother lives in San Diego in the East Village area. Very walkable to grocery store, parks, library, museums, Petco Park (baseball), waterfront, etc... That area is quite pricey now though.

Thanks for the advice, RH.  We just spend the last 5 days bouncing around the different San Diego neighborhoods and as you mentioned most everything in the East Village is a little steep for us.  We did get the chance to stay in a great Airbnb Studio in the East Village.

We were able to find a couple of potential places a touch further east in the Golden Hills area, and also North Park.  We are now waiting for the property managers to process all the applications and pick us!

Thanks again for your help.

Do you want to be in the city? There's lots of nice areas but they are NOT cheap. If you go to North County (ie: Oceanside)- it's way cheaper but it's not downtown. Frankly, I preferred being away from the City. Always smells like piss in the summer.

My sister recently moved there and found a 2 bed/1 bath apartment in Pacific Beach for $1400/month. It's 2 miles from the beach, and pretty much 10 minutes away from anything you might want to go to. It's pretty much a beach town if you're into that.

Two questions:

1.  What's your budget?

2.  Have you been to San Diego?

Before visiting, we wanted to live right in the heart of downtown, in/near the Gaslamp quarter.  After visiting, however, it just wasn't the type of atmosphere we were looking for.  Luckily we just fell in love with Coronado Island, and La Jolla!  Just an FYI in case you haven't explored the area much yet, I recommend spending a good amount of time checking out the neighborhoods in person.
