Saw this deal today. Seems pretty good. What does the MMM community think?

Well a normal gold membership is also $55, so basically all this gives you is the $20 in a Costco gift card.

It might be depending on what you buy. You'd have to do the cost analysis for a typical month to see if you would even get $3 savings a month with it without overbuying stuff you don't need. Personally, I've never set foot in a Costco so I don't know their prices. I use Sam's Club because its closer to my house and I can bike there. I have a very short list of things that I can buy that are actually cheaper though. So I don't net significant savings maybe $10 a month on a $4 a month membership.

For me I only buy cheese, flour, eggs, half and half, tortillas, hot sauce, cat litter, and meat. Some items can be found for approx the same price at the grocery store (cheaper when you include my CC rewards) but I like the convenience of not having to wait for the sale to buy it.

They'll refund your membership if you don't get your money's worth--or even if you do but say you aren't happy--so what have you got to lose? I find it worthwhile.

We pay for our membership in gas alone, not taking into account anything we buy in the store itself.

It is a good deal if you were considering it anyway $20 gift card, a huge pie (Thanksgiving gather?) and a rotisserie chicken and a thirty pack of toilet paper. Those make the deal pretty much free- though I have no idea what I am going to do with that much pie.

I think it's a pretty good deal if you're interested in becoming a Costco member.  The $20 gift card, $15 toilet paper, $5 chicken and close to $10 huge pie (if you like pie) makes the first year membership almost free.  Costco sells mostly high quality stuff from what I've seen.  Not everything is cheaper but lots of things are....especially if you watch and wait for certain items that you buy to go on sale. Gas is usually cheaper there as well and getting your LP gas for your grill is cheaper also.

It's a discount over the normal membership fee, so you might as well go with the LivingSocial deal if you were planning to join anyway.

We regularly buy a number of items at Costco for a discount over normal retail prices, including flour, sugar, cheese, beer, men's jeans, all types of soap, and more. The store also treats their employees well and is headquartered in my state of residence, so I like giving them my business when possible.

It's a pretty sweet deal if you can change your habits enough to make costco worthwhile.  For us, we break even on our yearly costco membership in about 1 month of essentials.  The rest of the year is gravy :-)  Things that are really worth getting at Costco (at least around here in Boston):

  • Dog Food (OMG, I can make back my membership in 3 months JUST in dog food savings)
  • Toilet Paper
  • OTC Medications
  • Laundry Detergent (Costco brand fragrance free is great and super cheap)
  • Rice, Flour, Olive Oil, Canned Chick Peas, Oats, Peanut Butter, Anchovies
  • Sonicare brush head replacements
  • Limes, Avocados, Cheese, Onions

And probably a bunch more I'm not remembering at the moment.

What you have to be careful about is all the junk they have surrounding the staples.  Costco gets you to overspend by having ridiculously low prices on tons of stuff you don't need.

Make a list.  Stick to the list.

Another tip is to put the Amazon app on your phone and scan barcodes of stuff as you shop.  Sometimes amazon is cheaper, usually costco has them beat.

After reading through all of this and the other message string last night, I decided to go for it!  We'll see how much we save this first year, but I think cat litter might make it worth it.
If anyone decides to go ahead and buy, I would so appreciate it if you use my link.  I just need one more purchase to get the deal for free!

I will come back and update if someone clicks through to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to get the deal for free.

Just found out that one more person bought!  Thanks to whoever it was!!

Posting here from the other thread in the hopes that 2 more people might use my link.

I just got back from Costco for the first time. I will echo that the price of dog food probably makes it worth your membership if you have a large dog. Gas is also notably cheaper than the surrounding gas stations.

Edit: Thanks to whoever used my link (I can see the name through Living Social, but I don't know your username)! I only need one more now.

Edit 2: Removed my link since I got mine for free. Thanks everyone!!

OP, thanks for the heads up!  I've been wanting this deal to come around for a while.  (The gas cost is what makes it worth it for me.)

Apparently this deal expires in 1 day.  Which may mean midnight tonight.  So if you've been waffling like me, this is your last chance!

Here's my link... I think it's worth it even if I don't get three referrals, but that would be a super bonus...

I also signed up, deal appears still to be live?  Sorry, I did this very early in the thread and didn't see anyone else's links at the time I did it, so didn't help anyone out :( .  But if the other links get filled and anyone would be so kind as to use mine, it's https://t.livingsocial.com/deals/1253874?ref=email-jp&rpi=172773630&rui=190058559
