LinkedIn profile
« on: September 16, 2015, 03:45:49 PM »
I have recently created a LinkedIn profile and I would like to hear some feedback from this forum.

Some background information:
I am a student at the Community College of Denver.
I will be graduating on December 10 with my AAS in Computer Information Systems as well as a certificate in Computer Technology.
I am 20 and will be looking for my first "real" job quite soon.

All feedback is gladly accepted!
Thank you for your time!

PS: I literally have 0 connections and I will be adding a picture very soon.

Do you have any experience at all? Even something unrelated just to help fill out the profile?

That and start networking with people. Add some of your professors, your friends, etc... Making acquaintances and co-workers of your parents who work in the field. Never know when that might be helpful.

I have been a courtesy clerk at king soopers, a delivery driver at two different restaurants, and a Diesel Technician at a dealership. Should I add all or some of these?

More skills! I know you have them!

Examples from mine: public speaking, problem solving, art, presentation design, Microsoft Office, blogging, retail, Spanish, writing.

Otherwise, get some connections. School mates are a great source of contacts. You don't have to be friends... people who have seen your projects, done group work with you, heard you speak in front of the class, etc.  Do not expect that people you have never worked with or done schoolwork with (like your non-work friends) to link in with you.

I personally avoid linking in with people I have never met or seen in their professional capacity. I am linked in with my brother and uncle but none of my other relatives or friends unless we worked together. This is fully up to you to decide.

Also, follow major perspective employers in your area... you know who they are.

Will do! Doing this now.

Whichever of those are the most recent, where you were employed the longest. Its just there so they see you have worked somewhere and can be a reliable employee.

I added my past employment and I have started to reach out to people to connect with. Any other suggestions?

Add a profile picture, try to emulate the best pictures of others in your target field.
That said security can be an odd field and plenty of people offer little/no details as proof they are concious of identity take-overs.

In your Summary add in what potential job you are looking for. Instead of saying something like cyber security is an interesting field I would say something like:
"I have a deep passion for cyber security at the network perimeter and would welcome the opportunity to develop and add value to companies specialising in DDoS prevention, load balancers and/or CDNs. I love understanding my work inside and out and it is my goal to be recognised specialist in the industry within X years"

I saw a typo on your profile - I think it said pursing instead of pursuing.  It is a tiny detail but sometimes people interpret that as lacking attention.  Other than that I agree with vagon, you need something in your summary that is descriptive and will stick out in the minds of recruiters.  Getting a good LinkedIn profile is hard!  Mine needs some work too.  Best of luck!
