landscaping backyard - looking for ideas
« on: June 06, 2016, 09:12:04 PM »
Hi all,

I'm finally getting to some much needed landscaping this summer and curious to get everyone's thoughts about some must have features. The area will be about 25' x 35' and will have access to water, electricity, and gas. Money is certainly a concern, but for this exercise pretend that it's not -- be creative (within reason).

So what would you put back there? Note, I will have a son by the time it's finished.

Thanks!

Earth oven. There's a book: How to Build an Earth Oven.
Wood-fired stove pizza...and the hammock, as BlueHouse says.

Nice shed if you don't have a garage. Patio, veggie patch and rain barrel if you enjoy gardening, hammock, clothesline, compost bin, fencing to keep little kid corralled maybe?

+1 For the raised garden beds.
May as well get a little food out of your landscape maintenance efforts.

Maybe a treehouse for when the kid is bigger if there are mature trees! Even a tiny one thrills them.

Small fire pit and some party lights you can string from the trees (if you have trees),  tiki torches, and a small table or large table and chairs for when you have guests.  Some type of shade/pergola if no trees.  A bbq grill is a must.  Lots of perennials for added color.

@MayDay mentioned a sandbox. They can be great, but make sure to cover it so the neighborhood pets don't use it as a litter box.

We ended up putting in about 50% sod, with perimeter of rocks, boulders, and mulch. I made a note of shadows/sun in the morning, afternoon, and evening, then placed: three evergreens on the north boundary to eventually provide a wind break, two dwarf fruit trees on the south boundary (the most/longest amount of sun), and one oak on the west boundary (to block summer sun into home).  I started out wanting to place flowers in our perimeter mulch beds, but have since decided on vegetation (bushes, grasses, etc.) native to the area- they need less water, and I spend far less time weeding. And its still pretty.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
