Ladies: Who do you read?
« on: April 10, 2016, 06:44:35 PM »
Fellow lady mustachians, which blogs do you follow? How about podcasts? I'm curious to see who else is out there in the budgeting/personal finance/money space. Who speaks to you (regardless of their gender)?

From the 1990's - Vicki Robin (writer of You Money or Your Life), and Amy Dacyczyn (The tightwad Gazette - used to be a newsletter, now a book).

Over the years I have slowly transformed to Amy's midset of not buying things to solve problems and instead thinking of ways to solve the issue with things you have on hand.  She was around pre-internet, so it is a lot easier for me to just search "homemade XXX" or "how to fix XXX", but she was/is a very creative person.

Livingstingy.  Robert Platt Bell has the right amount of snark for my tastes.

I like LivingStingy by Robert Platt Bell and the Frugalwoods.  I was so happy that they bought their homestead.  I've got no interest in homesteading but I really enjoy her writing style and I can relate to them.   Haven't gotten into podcasts though.

I used to read Gail Vaz-Oxlade's blog but the MMM Forum replaced that for me.  Her message was/is pretty common sense - get out of debt, if you are married, start working together as a couple, track your finances.

I also like Afford Anything plus blondonabudget.  I check out the Simple Dollar once a week or so.  I don't like all the writers there and the more long-windedly philosophical Trent gets, the less I enjoy it.  But there are interesting things there sometimes.  (Not complaining - I know a lot of people like the new direction he's taking.)

I don't post a lot on this (MMM) forum but I read it most days.

Thanks for asking this question!  I have a few more sites to check out now.

Replying partially to keep tabs on this for future use =)

My list is a blend of finance and simple living, since those are very entertwined for me:
Frugalwoods
Becoming Minimalist
Slow Your Home (the earlier stuff more, and not the podcast- the later stuff and everything I've listened to have felt a little contrived, unfortunately)
Book- "The Simple Living Guide" by Janet Luehrs. Some parts have not aged well (hellooooo car phone and pager references!) but it was a pivotal book for me, and I have read it many times since. Bought at a goodwill no less ;)

Martini's and Your Money podcast. Mrs Frugalwoods is a guest on it on the last Friday of each month. Women talking about finance and life over cheap drinks.

I like The Frugal Girl. Her life as a homeschooling mom to four is really different from mine, but I like her very thoughtful approach to frugality. Like me she is a "moderate" rather than an "all-in" kind of person, so I get more that is useful from her posts than some of the bloggers who are using more extreme methods (although I enjoy reading them).

Theprudenthomemaker.com. She's a homeschooling Mormon mother of seven, none of which I identify with, but the lady knows how to pinch a penny, and her recipes are very good. She also leads a surprisingly elegant life. I have learned a lot from her and her active group of commenters.

+1 to the happy hour. I don't listen to the podcast otherwise, but I do listen to the happy hour episode each month.

I like http://lauravanderkam.com/.  She's the author of "I Know How She Does It", a great time-management book (not as lame as it sounds, really!).  The blog focuses on her day-to-day life but has lots of ideas of how to be productive/get more done, succeed financially, and keep your sense of identity (intellectual interests, hobbies, career growth), despite the demands of motherhood.  She's a role model.

Yep. I'm also not religious and not a parent, but I love her blog.

Love frugalwoods.com and theprudenthomemaker.com -- as others have noted, I have almost nothing in common with Brandi, the author of the Prudent Homemaker, but I love her approach to life and enjoy reading the comments from her diverse group of followers. She has a very positive take on frugality, presents a beautiful home on a very tight budget, and has great frugal recipes. I get good ideas from her all the time.

simplelivingforums.net  (message boards--that's how I found MMM)

frugalwoods

www.myopenwallet.net (blog - early 40s woman in NY)

I read Laura Vanderkam's book 168 Hours and liked it mostly (when I wasn't annoyed with her for being so damn productive and cheery).  marina's comment makes me think about visiting her site.

Wow, there are so many here I hadn't heard of - thanks you guys! As I'm starting to do my own blogging, I've been curious about other women in this space. Not that men don't have anything to contribute - they totally do - but sometimes you want to hear from another woman. I can't wait to check all of these out!
