Job hunt faux pas
« on: June 07, 2016, 05:02:12 AM »
Background: I have only been at my current job for one year. However, they have recently laid off dozens, and people (including me) are getting nervous. So, I decided to put some feelers out.

I stayed late yesterday afternoon to use my work laptop, and it apparently spontaneously printed a copy of my resume. On the main printer, that my entire floor uses. I just got in for the morning and the copy was sitting face down on my desk. Oops! I really like my boss, and he does not know I'm looking. I would only leave for my dream job, anyway, unless I was laid off. Any words of wisdom? Please tell me I'm not the first one to do this!

Well, so what? You were just printing it because we all keep a couple copies of our resumes in our files. It doesn't mean anything one way or the other. I wouldn't worry about it.

There is nothing you can do at this point--it is out of your control, especially if your company is going through layoffs.  If a co-worker put the resume on your desk, they probably understand.  I wouldn't worry about it.

It's done.  If your boss knows, and they like you too, then they might start trying to reassure you about the future of your position at the company.  Any manager worth their salt knows that good people start looking when there are layoffs.  And if it was a co-worker, ditto.  If they are vindictive, then they're being irrational and you're well away from it.

This is better than what happened at my last job, which is that someone left a list of the people they were planning to lay off at the printer.

*shudder*

I have a good relationship with my boss, who is currently on vacation. He knows another person in our dept is currently taking interviews, and does not appear concerned. Honestly, I would expect most of our company to be at least updating their resume just in case.  Who wouldn't want to be prepared?
