It's that time again: Netflix recommendations
« on: October 26, 2017, 04:51:55 PM »
I've been sick all week and it is starting to make me stir crazy. I watch a bit of baseball the past couple of days, but now we are planning Netflix for tonight. Here are some new movies; which would you go with?

Atomic Blonde (have not seen)
Boogie Nights (have seen but don't remember well)
Eyes Wide Shut (bc it's kind of Halloweeny)
Donnie Darko (have not seen)
The Meyerowitz Stories (have not seen)
The Hateful Eight (have not seen)
Ghost World (have not seen)
The Machinist (have not seen)
Lady MacBeth (have not seen)

What say you?

And my one recommendation:
Talledega Nights, The Ballad of Ricky Bobby

What are you in the mood to see?

I have seen Boogie Nights, Eyes Wide Shut, Donnie Darko (actually own this I think), and The Machinist.

One of those does not belong; Boogie. The others are all on the more serious side with a bit or darkness.

I found Manhunt interesting, it is a series about the Unabomber. The other along the same lines is Mindhunter which is about the FBI profiling history.

iZombie was pretty funny, first season anyways. Oh, how about Black Mirror? Bleak, dark, and very eerie.

Hmmm, I will have to check out black mirror. Thank you for the feedback on some of the others.

Yes, I know these choices are kind of all over the place. Any other thoughts?

I recommend Ghost World, one of my favorite movies.

I thought Boogie Nights and Eyes Wide Shut were horrible (fun fact: I was asked to be an extra in Eyes Wide Shut but declined; part of me thinks it was actually a Nigerian scam anyway).

Ghost World looks very intriguing.

I'm a huge Quentin Tarantino fan so of course The Hateful Eight gets my vote.

Mindhunters (series) is great. Stranger Things 2 comes out tomorrow.

How about:
...
Peaky Blinders
...

Yes. There were some other good ones in there, but this is a great show that I rarely hear mention of.

I've been more into series than movies lately.  For example:

Narcos

Wentworth

Stranger Things

Nurse Jackie

Glow

Jane the Virgin - smart, sweet, funny, earnest, all in the form of a Telenovela

The 100 - I like to think the WB's plan was to lure tweens in by making a show that looks like a Twilight-esque teenybopper show.  Then they pull back the curtain, "Psyche, it's a show about war crimes and other heavy issues.  We tricked you into watching something interesting, deep, and meaningful."

Not a movie, but we've been completely obsessed with an Australian series called "Glitch." I typically hate anything that leans toward science fiction, but there's enough non-sci-fi in it to keep me mesmerized.

It's about a handful of people who come back to life after being dead for anywhere from a few years to a few hundred years. Some of them, of course, still have living friends and relatives, many of whom have moved on, and others are walking bits of history who have to figure out how to navigate the present world. I'm not describing it very well. Maybe the trailer does a better job!

Of those you listed, I'd recommend "The Machinist." When they had star ratings on Netflix it was only 2/5, however I thought it was a great movie.

Hateful 8 was decent.

I thought Boogie Nights was excellent.

I was wondering who produced this show as I finally started watching this most interesting show. It reminds me of a live action version of the Fallout Series. Mucho bueno.

I had forgotten the name of this show so I did not mention, but it is great! I love science fiction, but this is more a drama I think about the repercussions of them coming "back to life". Didn't they come out of their graves as if they were just buried alive, all dusty and confused? Either way, a trippy show.

I've been looking for a new place to share a show called "schitts Creek" on Netflix.

Not the genre you were looking for but I felt compelled to share it.    It's about an Uber rich family that loses everything and moves to a small town.     Reverse Beverly Hills hillbillies.

^We've watched a few episodes of Schitts Creek and gotten a kick out of it.

I psyched myself up to watch Atomic Blonde, then my other half vetoed it.

Next, I tried to get my daughter to watch it with me, which got this reaction:
"It's called Atomic Blonde? Eww. You can't seriously expect me to watch that." But it seems exactly like the kind of movie she watches regularly, so whatever. She went to see Bladerunner 2049 in the theater with me, so I'm giving her a pass. She also liked the series The 100.

Thank you for the confirmations on some of the others. The last two shows I made it through all existing seasons were Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. I enjoyed the first set of Narcos but I'm kind of burning out in season 2. Also, I think there are one or two new BBC Sherlock series episodes I haven't seen.

The Killing - Very believable, real characters; dark, brooding tone lightened by hilarious banter between the two main characters; suspenseful story lines

Jane the Virgin - Compelling characters, compelling drama, ridiculous plot twists with tongue-in-cheek narrating to let you know the show doesn't take itself too seriously

Black Mirror - Provocative, dystopian

Starting the Machinist now.

It seems my list of options was free streaming on Amazon Prime, not Netflix, FWIW.

Doh, this makes all the difference!  On Amazon Prime, I am currently in the middle of streaming the tv series The Americans.  LOVE it!

Donnie Darko (have not seen)

I adore this movie. And very appropriate for Halloween.

Don't know if it's on the US Netflix, but I really enjoyed Detectorists, a British comedy about some goofy characters that go metal detecting.

The Meyerowitz Stories (have not seen)

Since no one commented on this yet, it's an odd, yet entertaining film.  It's definitely influenced by Woody Allen, and has the feel of one of his movies.  If you like Woody Allen-style movies, you'll like this one.  If you don't, you probably won't.

Still, Hateful Eight was a great western, and you should definitely watch that one too.

Thank you for the recommendations!

I enjoyed the machinist pretty well . . . although it was hard to watch in some ways.

We also watched Get Out from Redbox, 'cause we rich folk can afford it. That one is 5 stars, 2 thumbs up. One of the best films of the year.

It will make you think, and then you need to watch it again. It led to a great symbolism conversation with the kids, too.

I didn't recommend that one here because it's not on Netflix nor included with Amazon Prime, but that is one I've been recommending to so many friends.  I agree it's the best film I've seen this year . . . probably in more years than that actually.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
