Title: Issue with Mint Budgeting Tool
Post by: Mortgage Free Mike on February 07, 2014, 08:17:54 AM
For the past few years, I've been using Mint.com. The app is great. I can budget on the go.
But my budget (income and expenses) varies by month. With Mint, I have to go in at the first of the month and make tweaks.
How do you work around this issue? Are there any alternatives that you like?

Mint is best for tracking spending, not budgeting.

YNAB is generally the recommended tool for budgeting, if you're into that sort of thing.  Many of us don't bother to budget, we just track what we spend.

Mint does offer an option to "Roll over balance at the end of each month".  That means if you budget $100 for clothing but only spend $50, you'll have $150 for next month, or if you spent $120, you'd only have $80 next month.

Admittedly though, YNAB's strategy of budgeting last month's income may suit your needs better.

I don't mean to hijack your thread, but if you say you're an experienced Mint user, perhaps you can answer my question.  I recently transferred some accounts and in the process there was a short lived computer error that showed I had 2 accounts containing $X when I only had one.  Everything shows correctly now, but when I look through my Net Worth history, that error shows up saying my Net Worth was more than it actually was for that month.  Is there any way to correct this?

Thanks.

I have noticed the rollover tool. It's not quite what I need, but I might give that a shot for some expense categories.

As for your question, I had trouble with duplicate transactions. Under that tab, I was able to edit details and then mark "This is a duplicate" for those transactions.

You can always reach out to Mint support. They're good at getting back to people.  Best of luck.
