ISO recommendations for cargo capacity on bike
« on: July 31, 2016, 07:15:04 AM »
We've moved and I'm not longer within an easy walk of the grocery store while carrying more than a few groceries, but it's still a very easy bike ride.  Right now, my bike has a basket on the front, but that's the only cargo capacity.  I looked at panniers, and was shocked by the price.  Any recommendations?  I don't need a ton of capacity, and on Japanese streets a trailer of any kind is out.

(It it matters, my bike does have a flat rack above the back tire. It's hard to explain what kind of bike I have, since it's Japanese and not really like any typical US bike type.  It's like a combination between a beach cruiser and a tank (in that it's extremely heavy), I guess.)

Should be a way to find a good used set of bags for a lot less, or just make your own.  Someone posted in the share badassity forum a set they made out of two square buckets with lids.  As long as you get the rack for over the back wheel there are loads of ways to add bags/baskets etc.

As long as you limit the load to ~20 pounds, a seatpost mounted rack/pannier setup like this will work:

Or wear a backpack, if you really don't want to spend the money on real panniers.

I attached a milk crate to the rack over my bike's rear tire. I used zip ties to attach it. Works great.
