Is this OK to donate
« on: April 11, 2017, 03:50:57 PM »
I have an old food processor but am missing the blade. It still works and spins though - should I ewaste it? Or is it OK to donate? I'd understand if the thing were fried or completely broken and that I should ewaste it, but it runs fine - it's just missing the removable blade.

Thoughts?

How easy would it be to replace the blade? If difficult, I wouldn't donate it...they'll just trash it if you don't.

You could call the donation center and ask them.  I would guess they wouldn't want it, but every place has their own rules.

Is it a Cuisinart? They recently had a blade recall affecting multiple models. You could potentially score a free replacement blade. They don't actually ask you to return the old one.

Also you should check if replacement parts are available online. I had a food processor where the little lip on the lid that activates the "can't turn the motor on with the lid off" safety feature broke off. I ordered a new one for about $10 online and it's still running strong. Might not be worth buying a replacement part just to go and give the thing to Goodwill (depends on the blade value vs. machine value and your tax bracket, etc.), but you might be able to recoup your cost through Craigslist if you do this.

Nah, it's a Hamilton Beach. It's pretty crappy - the peg that holds one of those cheese grater/slicer attachments also broke so you can't use that part of it. But the main part (for standard processing and chopping) is all in tact and works fine.

Ewaste. Charity shops/thrift stores don't have time to hunt down parts.

Trash it - would you ever buy a blender without a blade?
