Is there a sweet spot of year/mileage for Prius?
« on: September 13, 2019, 03:31:29 PM »
In the market for a replacement car. Mainly commuting. I've been looking at Prius' but there's such a wide range I'm not sure what to go for. The wild card is, I have no idea how long we'll keep the car. So I'm looking to get a good deal on one that wouldn't lose much value or require high cost repairs in the next 6mos-2 years. I anticipate to add 10k miles/year.

I was leaning towards the 2010's, mainly because of the larger engine (DH is not keen on driving a Prius).
I've seen some 2010's with 70k miles for $9500.
2010 with 125k for 7900
2011 with 125k for 6500
And a whole mess of of 2007's 125k-170k everyone lists them for ~$6000-$6500.

Any sweet spot to target where I won't get too much of a depreciation hit? Or specific years to target based on reliability? Any mileage where some large maintenance typically needs to be done?

I bought a 2007 with 100k+ miles on it 3 years ago, $5000. Still going strong. Will have to sell in a year when we move, I think, or drive it across country. Haven't decided yet. I probably wouldn't pay $6000 for it, though.

The 2011 for $6500 would tempt me. I don't know a ton about the differences across the years.

I have a 2012 Prius v3 bought new at the end of 2011 and its still going fine, 100,000 miles later. So the car is almost 8 years old and I would have no problem doing cross-country in the car.

We bought our 2007 Prius in January of 2018. 68k miles for $8000. Excellent condition. We were actually looking for a older Prius after doing some research on them and was quite happy with the purchase. No regrets and it has been a wonderful car! We drive a lot, so a must was low miles. I have to say, even with the 2011 there is always a chance of high cost repairs. It’s really a toss up with that. I personally think the one with lower miles would be easier to resell later on.

I drive a hybrid -- though not a Prius -- and I just wanted to mention that when you are looking at odometer mileage on a hybrid you should only consider about 2/3rds of the odometer count, because at least 1/3 of those miles will be from the electric motor, so the actual mileage wear on the ICE is much lower. That's why hybrids like the Prius that are used as taxicabs in major cities often operate for more than 500,000 miles. A Prius with 125000 miles is still quite a prime vehicle.

I have a 2016 Prius which I purchased with 48K on the odometer, it has not given me any problems at all and I seriously wish I had bought one years ago.  I only need to buy gas maybe once a month.
