Title: Is PB&J the most Mustachian lunch?
Post by: Davids on July 28, 2014, 08:37:37 PM
I bag my lunch Mon - Thurs and go out on Friday just to get out of the office (I suppose a facepunch could be in order for that...). Pretty much my lunch Mon - Thurs is a PB&J, Banana and Apple. I was thinking to myself today if PB&J is the most Mustachian lunch to have.

Nope. Stir fry. Thirty cents of rice and vegetables and scraps of whatever leftovers you want, for a full lunch or dinner.

Or burritos, which are pretty much the same thing wrapped in a tortilla.

PB&J is an extremely Mustachian lunch.  I have it all the time.  I buy the peanut butter and jelly in bulk at the warehouse club and bake my own loaves of bread in our bread machine.  It probably only costs about 10 cents per sandwich.  For me, PB&J is my go-to quick meal on workout days.

Yes--but only if you made your own bread from bulk purchased items, hand collected berries in a nearby forest (to which you biked) and made jam, and for exercise gound your own peanut butter with a hand grinder you bought on craigslist for $15.

Then yes, it would be the most mustachian lunch ever...

Here, that apple and maybe banana are less MMM...
They are about $1.  $.75 for apple and $.25 for banana..
Pb and j?  $.25+ for two slices of bread, plus $.25 for jam if store bought., plus $.10 for pb.  Pb is $.60 per sandwich.

Homemade bread, pasta, rice and leftover veg that you may throw away is likely they cheapest...

Either way pb is totally MMM.

No, appropriating ketchup packets and crackers from Wendys, mixing them with hot water and making soup is as ba as it gets.

That's sort of douchey and weird though, I think your pb and j is a fantastic way to justify a weekly lunch.

I've tried that a few times. It doesn't work for me. I love PBJ so much that I can't stop thinking about the sandwich when I'm supposed to be working, end up scarfing it down on my morning break, and end up starving by mid afternoon due to eating my lunch at 9:30am.

So instead I bring a "normal" leftover lunch and have PBJ every day when I get home from work. Oh, and PBJ is often one of my weekend lunches as well. My boyfriend thinks it's nuts.

Only if you are very sparing with both the PB and the J.  There should just be an atom-thin veneer of each on the bread, no thick, gooey, diabetic globs of sugar and fat.

Hmm...getting a lunchbox at a Goodwill/Salavation Army type place to use for years is arguably more mustachian than using brown paper bags or plastic bags. Also, I reuse plastic sandwich baggies 3-4 times each :D

The only thing about stir fry is I feel like it doesn't have a lot of subsistence. I always get hungry like an hour later lol. PB&J "sticks to your insides" a bit more.

Out of curiosity, how do folks here go about making PB&J's? Do you:
a) Spread peanut butter on one side and jelly on the other then stick them together; or
b) Spread peanut butter on one side followed by jelly on the same side?

I have a few family members who do option b) and it's a little intriguing, although I always do option a).

Allergic to peanuts, so I make almond butter and jelly sandwiches. Almond butter is store bought for now, but I made some killer strawberry jam. So much better than store crap, and it has very little added sugar as preserves go.

Shame that I got into canning at the tail end of strawberry season here. That's one of the cheapest fruits to get locally at $1.68 a pound if you pick it yourself, and the prime ripe berries are so much better than anything I've bought from the store.

I love pbj's.  I have this chocolate making machine (terrible unmustachian, but was for our small business idea).  It makes the most incredible nut and seed butters.  My favorite is a combo is sunflower and hemp seeds and no added sugars.  I pair it with some fruit sweetened jam and it is heavenly.

I don't have a link or anything, but I know Len Penzo did a comparison of sandwich prices for his kids to take to school.  I think a bologna and cheese sandwich was the winner, though I could be wrong.  Of course, I wouldn't eat one of those anymore, but I had one every single day when I was 12.

I'm with those who say a sandwich wouldn't fill me up - a year of living in France during my teens taught me that a sandwich is an after school snack, and lunch requires an actual meal.
However, I have a trivial little question triggered by an American movie - does PB&J pre-combined in a jar really exist? And do people really eat it?

Now that's funny....

Having said that, I do eat a lot of PB & BP this time of year, the BP being blackberry preserves, and by happy coincidence I do often bike to the blackberry patch to gather them up. I made 640 oz of preserves this year (mostly in 8 oz jars), I give the vast majority away.

I try not to make a habit of it, but I still eat Ramen Noodles from time to time if I forget my sandwich and fruit or a lunch meeting gets canceled. They run $.25 a pack and I only eat one pack for a lunch (but could eat a little more for sure).  I keep them stashed in a desk drawer at the office.

I haven't been able to make it to a cheap lunch yet. Best I can do is a turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomatoes, and lemon. And some chips. Works out to about $5 a lunch. I'd rather work on the income side of things and if I need to spend money to not eat PB&J or Ramen, fine. I just haven't gotten to the point where I'm willing to forgo meat to save money, can't bring myself to do it.

I have had 2 Peanut Butter & Honey sandwiches for lunch almost every day for the past 50 years. Love them!

Probably not the most Mustachian since it has to be Sioux Bee Spun Honey which costs me like $6 a container but it has certainly been a lot less expensive than eating out.

You sound just like me.  :-)  I PB&J Monday through Thursday and then go out with the group on Friday!

My selection of PB&J is simply due to it being the only thing that's both super easy to put together real quick and does not require refrigeration.

You clearly don't make a good PB&J then.  I'm about 200 pounds and I get a lot of exercise and 1 of my sandwiches easily fills me up.  Thicken that sucker up if you need more fuel.

I'm also a big fan of PB & Honey.  Whipped honey to be exact.

Least mustachian variation is made with thimbleberry jam.  That craps is crazy expensive but so delicious.

PB&J doesn't fill me up either, but I snack all day. Before lunch at work I usually eat nuts, cheese, Greek yogurt, apple, banana, plenty of water, and usually a coffee. Thus, my PB&J is a nice snack during my lunch break.

I really dislike peanut butter and jelly sandwiches (I had a bad experience with wet PB&J sandwiches on a fishing trip when I was 12), and I can't eat them to this day without feeling sick.

My lunch consists of:
2 meat&cheese sandwiches (whatever decent meat and cheese I can find for cheap) with mayonnaise.
1 tin yoghurt
1 banana

Been having this for the last 3 months after I stopped buying my lunches. It fills me up, I enjoy eating it, and it costs me about $2/meal. Probably not as cheap as cooking something, but it's easy to make and way cheaper than buying a lunch every day.

I'm looking at starting cooking meals for the week - will have to see if that's cheaper. The current problem is that both meat and cheese aren't the cheapest ingredients.

Can't do it...a PB&J and two pieces of fruit is a lot of sugar and simple carbs.  Makes me fat and the 'beetus runs in my family :(

I have to pack a lunch of protein and veggies, usually leftovers.  More expensive but keeps my blood sugar stable and staves off hunger.

Not a fan of jelly (though only really had store-bought), but I do love peanut butter. Going to Vegas for work, during the day the main options for lunch are to go to a stall for an overpriced, terrible tasting, unhealthy lunch, or bring in stuff. For the past few years we have brought in pb and store-bought bread. While the bread isn't the healthiest, it enables us to spend maybe a dollar per person per lunch, as opposed to spending a minimum of $8. Also the greasy lunches leave me sluggish in the afternoon, whereas with pb I am way more productive.

I like PB and honey, which I eat on the weekend. I'd go crazy if I had PB for lunch every day. My husband makes our PB, as well as almond butter (to die for) and a sort of Nutella-like spread from hazelnuts. Oh yeah, and he makes our bread, too.

$5 would mean you can have a pound of chicken and a pound of cheese on your sandwich... At least in my area.

I typically eat one of two things for lunch.

1) left over home made pizza at less than $0.62/slice (so $1.24 for lunch)
2) Chicken wrap with lettuce, onion, and tomato. Probably ~$2, made out of home cooked chicken breast ($2/lb), peperjack cheese ($3.50/lb), burrito wrap, lettuce, onion, mayo, and sometimes tomato if we have it.

Always eaten with 32oz home made iced tea at less than $0.25.

So for you, you'd probably save a bit of money if you switch off of expensive lunch meats. Roast Beef is my go to lunch meet, but is closer to $9/lb where as uncooked boneless chicken breast is $2/lb and I love chicken so it works for me.

I wonder how PB&J compares to  home made hummus sandwiches, home-made pimento cheese, or olive and cream cheese?  I guess the cheese ones are a bit more expensive.  bean salad and crackers also really cheap.

We are vegetarians (but my kids eat some meat)  I pretty much rotate the kids through Cream Cheese&Olive, Fried Egg, PB&J, Egg salad, Pimento Cheese, Grilled Cheese, Hummus&Pickle, Tuna Salad for packed lunches.  All cheap and less chance of spoilage before use as compared to lunch meat.

We're a peanut butter and honey family.  One of my kids would eat PB&H sandwiches for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, if I let her.  I try to go easy on the honey, we prefer home made bread, thinly sliced, but will settle for a store bought wheat if we have to.  A real treat is using Challah bread.

Early on when I didn't have leftovers I'd typically make PB&Js for my lunches, but when I started trying to eat a bit better I shifted to making and bringing in a salad and topping it with whatever leftover meat we had around (usually taco meat- yum).

When I was younger and attending/working at summer camp PB & Honey was my go-to when I either didn't like what the actual meal was supposed to be or there wasn't enough of it to fill me up. Haven't had one in AGES (though now I'm craving one- good thing I'll have my banana & honey peanut butter snack shortly...) but still love them.

PB is my favorite food, but I don't like jelly or jam -- too sweet. PB (the no-salt, no sugar kind) on homemade whole wheat bread (1 or 2 slices, depending on how hungry I am or how big the slices are), coffee, and some fresh or dried fruit is my daily breakfast. Because I have it for breakfast almost every day, I usually didn't take it for lunch when I was working unless I had nothing else to take or was in a hurry.

Mrs. KBB and I bring our lunch 3 - 4 days a week.  We work in the same place...I know, fishing in the company pond...but it also allows us to drive to work together (in a hybrid) saving a ton on gas as well.  No PB&J's for us.  When we cook dinner we always plan for just a bit left over for lunch the next day.  For example...today at lunch we dined on grilled chicken, home made potato salad, steamed fresh broccoli, and a ripe tomato from the farmers market...totally delish, WAY better than anything in any of the 3 cafeterias here, healther, and free...well, almost...we did buy one extra chicken breast to cook with dinner last night, but that was like $1.50.  Cheers!

Fun with Math and PB.

Using the price book method, I figured out that the 1kg of peanut butter no name comes on sale for as low as $2, but usually more like $5 once a year, and I buy 2-3 jars at a time.

$0.10 is 5% of $2 or 50 mg (similar to ml for solid foods) out of 1kg... e.g. 2 TBSP.

If the PB is priced at $5 (a typical sale every 2-3 months) then yes, I would be using either $0.25 of PB, or less than 1 TBSP at that price.  LOL.

Y'all had me making PB and jam (home made cherry jam) this morning for breakfast.
I bet I used 1.5 TBSP too, and it was quite a bit.

thick peanut butter on one side spread with a knife, then jelly out of a jar with a spoon and spread on top of the PB.  if consumption is meant immediately, of course.

If the sandwich must last a few hours, a thinner layer of PB on BOTH SIDES OF THE BREAD followed by a helping of jelly in the center.  The PB protects the bread from getting soggy from the jelly.

I frequently eat 2 pbj sandwiches at work. And I don't use baggies or paper sacks either. I just keep a stash of PB and bread in my office and jelly in the fridge. Yay for company supplied napkins and knifes.

I'm (a), but don't forget about c) mix PB&J in a bowl first, then spread over bread.

What?  Do you only use like 2 peanuts worth?  I buy my pb in bulk too and I use far more than 10 cents worth of just pb per sandwich.  Maybe I am just a pig and make huge sandwiches.

I think you meant grams.

$2 for 1kg of pb (1kg = 2.2 lbs)! That's cheap. The cheapest I can find pb is about 10 cents per ounce (1 ounce = 28.35 grams), so a 50g serving would be almost 20 cents.  Plus I do more than the recomended serving.  And I eat 2 sandwiches.

Costco doesn't carry a no name brand pb here.  It's either jif or a more expensive natural pb from costco.  Usually kroger wins for cheapest unit price, unless costco is having a good sale.

Also for the records 2 tbsp of pb is 32 g, so if thats all you use and you pay $2/kg, then you are only using 6.4 cents per sandwich.  My price for that amount is about 11 cents, and I usually double that per sandwich.

hmm.  or maybe I meant "Funny Math" instead of "Fun with Math"...

anyhow. 25 gm is about 25 ML, or about a TBSP so at least my conclusion was approximately correct...
I did mention "annual" sale...  rare, unusual, and exciting..   And I think that last year I missed it, or it was not held, so the $5 price was what I likely paid.    PB is banned in the schools here, so it lasts a long time at our home, for me or for weekends only.

Yes, it used to, not sure if it was pulled off the market. Picture the peanut butter jar containing alternating vertical stripes of peanut butter and grape jelly.  It might have been Jif that had this product, but I don't remember for sure. My mom would not but it whaen I was a kid, she thought it was stupid and too expensive.

Ewwww.

Not sure if you really know what a PB&J is, and are just making fun of the difference in terminology. But I know someone here in Australia who heard about Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches, couldn't figure out the appeal, and actually tried it. In Australia (and I'm sure other English speaking countries), Jelly = Jell-O. So this person made a peanut butter and jell-o sandwich.

To clarify, when an American says jelly, substitute that word with jam. I know I know, go to Walmart and you'll see a huge section with both jams and jellies (because there is a difference), but for all intents and purposes, jelly = jam.

Another interesting thing, grape jam isn't a thing here (at least, I couldn't find any in the normal supermarkets). Strawberry is popular, seen plum offered...but you're not going to get the wide variety like in the US. No gazing at all the choices...strawberry jelly or strawberry jam...seeds or seedless, with high fructose corn syrup or not...or maybe grape, blackberry, raspberry, even blueberry if you're lucky.

Oh, and you've only got a handful of peanut butter choices. You can get Kraft creamy or crunchy, or generic creamy or crunchy.

Actually, Jam is technically different than Jelly, at least in the US.

My family makes a ton of both jam and jelly. Jam consists of whole fruit, mashed up into tiny bits. It's much easier to make than jelly, which consists of only the juice from the fruit. It's an important difference - you'll really notice it when you have both jam and jelly made from the same fruit.

I don't know if it's just my family or the norm in Aus generally, but to me, jelly is for little kids who don't like lumps, and jam is for grown ups. My mum at any rate always refused to buy jelly, and the only companies I see that make it normally are the mass market, super high sugar brands. The fancy better tasting brands only seem to have jam. Oh, and the stores I go to have a lot more variety than just strawberry - admittedly not grape, but plenty of others (including some with native Aussie fruits which are quite lovely)

I know, I acknowledged that jam and jelly are technically different :) . If you say peanut butter and jam in the US, it's understood you mean the same basic thing as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. But saying peanut butter and jelly in Australia (and other parts of the world), it might be understood as a peanut butter and jell-o sandwich. Even "I" think that would be a bit weird :) . Though I guess it'd depend on the jelly...technically a home-made jelly might be spot-on, but still way different than the instant jell-o type of jelly.

Oh...back on topic...kids eat PB&Js all the time, though our oldest went through a phase of refusing them (think someone at the Australian school here made fun of him, so it was peanut butter and nutella sandwiches until our recent trip back to the US, now he's back on PB&J). I don't love them (the sandwiches!), but have no problem eating them. Make them quite often for outings.

For OCD reasons, I prefer putting peanut butter on one side, jam/jelly on the other, keeping both utensils completely separate. Since I also do dishes, I put peanut butter on first and jam on top. Use the same utensil (one less in the dishes pile), and it's easier to spread jam on top of a layer of peanut butter than directly on the bread. If it's going to be more than an hour or so until we eat them, then it's two layers of peanut butter with jam in the middle.

I hate PBJ made with the ubiquitous grape jelly.  PBJ on a good whole wheat bread with a  not-too-sweet apricot jam is good. Or cream cheese and jelly is a nice sandwich once in a while.

thick peanut butter on one side spread with a knife, then jelly out of a jar with a spoon and spread on top of the PB.  if consumption is meant immediately, of course.

If the sandwich must last a few hours, a thinner layer of PB on BOTH SIDES OF THE BREAD followed by a helping of jelly in the center.  The PB protects the bread from getting soggy from the jelly.

I must disagree.

1.  Spread peanut butter on bread with knife.
2.  Wipe knife on other piece of bread until nominally clean.
3.  Use spoon to put strawberry jam on wiped bread.
4.  Lick spoon.
5.  Spread jam with knife.
6.  Lick knife (carefully.)
7.  Assemble sandwich.

I buy massive quantities of peanut butter and jelly at a time, because I eat it several times a week before workouts and since it keeps for a very, very long time.  You'd be surprised how cheap it can be when you buy it in large enough containers at warehouse stores (and if you avoid brand names).

Most Mustachian lunch = a glass of olive oil, or maybe a stick of butter:  http://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2013/04/18/the-amazing-waist-slimming-wallet-fattening-nutrient/

Actually the symbol for grams is just g, not gm.  [/engineer]

25 g only = 25mL if it has the same density as water, pb doesn't.  2 tbsp of pb = 32g (from the nutrition label)

I have had my eye open for peanut butter at costco for close to a year.  They only sell jif, and a more expensive "natural" pb of costco brand.  Unless they are having a good sale on it it is usually cheaper to buy pb at kroger for around 9-10 cents/oz.   How much do you buy, and what is your unit price?

The best I can find is the local Kroger at 10 cents an oz like you said. I typically go through a lot of PB on a normal basis.
