Is FERS sick leave added to deferred pension?
« on: March 10, 2025, 07:58:56 AM »
Hi all,
I'll be 45 soon, 17 years in as federal employee, so too young to take the fork or Vera. I've never taken sick leave, normally take annual if I am sick since I have a lot. If I left service or was RIF'd I know I'd get a deferred pension for my 17 years at age 62, but I have about 10 months sick leave, so will that figure be added to my 17 years, or is it forfeited because I'm not on an immediate retirement?
Thanks!

From my understanding, half of your SL is credited to service credit.

That is just for those retiring before 2014 I believe. In my case I'm not fully eligible for retirement, but would receive a deferred pension at age 62 for my 17 years of service.  I'm hoping though that it would be about 18 years based on sick leave, however I'm not sure if its counted towards service if I'm not immediately able to retire.  So if I reached 30 years I know it would be counted, but for deferred retirement I don't know.

From my understanding, half of your SL is credited to service credit.

No, there is no sick leave credit for deferred pension.

If you return to federal service, it will remain on the books for you, and you could then get credit with immediate retirement eligibility.

(OPM specifies immediate retirement: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/leave-administration/fact-sheets/sick-leave-general-information/ )

Thanks so much for the link. I read that sick leave if remplpoyed could only ve reclaimed if reemployed within 3 years, but this didn't say that anywhere,  wo that's good to know! Also good to know the conditions around how muxh sock leave you csn take as an employee but also to care for others, thanks!
