Sound in kitchen
« on: April 07, 2017, 03:48:29 PM »
We like to have music, podcasts and radio in available in the kitchen.

Currently I have some old cheap computer speakers hooked up to a Chromecast audio.  I use that for a lot.

The problem with that is it currently has problem with noise and feedback (clicking sounds); Especially when nothing is being played.

My wife also keeps her old Bose cd player in the kitchen to listen to PBS live on the radio.  The speakers are really good on this thing but unfortunately the only "in" line is stereo composite.  When I use a cord to the chromcast on it there is all sorts of problems.

So I am figuring that I will have to spend some money and wanted to see what you guys recommend?  Thanks!

Currently we have an Amazon Echo and all our music has been uploaded to it. There is also a huge selection of other music out there that can be played. It is really nice because I can operate it entirely hands free which I find handy when cooking. Before that, I just stuck my smart phone, speaker down into an empty coffee mug. It amplified the music quite well but wore the charge on my phone battery down and I couldn't operate it hands free which is why I went to the plugged in Echo.

What cord are you using between the Chromecast and the Bose speakers? Is it something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/HDE-3-5mm-Composite-Audio-Video/dp/B00GO4EPKC

Is stereo composite the same as red and white RCA cables?  If so that's a good connection method.  Are your cables good quality and the connectors clean?

Yes composite is the same as RCA.  I have tried a couple different RCA cables and none works well.  I am figuring that the physical inputs are crap orb broken (which sucks because Bose is a really good brand).

Second vote for Sonos systems.  They are a bit pricey, but the functionality is incredible.  You can easily link multiple units together via WiFi and have them play the same music wherever you want in the house (no syncing issues), or have them play different music easily.  You control the system through a smartphone or computer.

Sonos are great.  We ended up selling ours a year ago.  Chromecast are a little more universal.

I remember I had an unused speaker in my garage, it is working great in the kitchen.

The Google Home is cheaper than a Sonos, and far more functional.  The sound quality isn't as good, but this is a kitchen we're talking about.  You're not silently floating in symphony of harmonics.  Also, it conveniently answers typical kitchen questions like "how many tablespoons in 3/4 cups" and will set timers or reminders for you by voice when your fingers are sticky from cooking.  And my four year old likes to say "hey google let's play the name game" and then sing along.  She's adorable.

$130 at https://store.google.com/product/google_home or any consumer electronics retailer.

As a side bonus you can still keep your chromecast hooked up to any other speakers, and the google Home will play multiroom synchronized audio on itself and on the chromecast's speakers, with a voice command.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
