I have a basic internet package included in the rent for my apartment, which is 5/2 Mbit/s. We do get quite fair prices for higher speeds because of the "discount" that we already have:
5/2 Mbit/s: Free
10/2 Mbit/s: $35
20/4 Mbit/s: $53 (I have this one and I like it)
Before you panic because of these prices, I live in Norway, where a good price for a non-discounted 10/1 Mbit/s DSL line would be around $60 a month. I have no problem "affording" the 20Mbit/s subscription (I won't go into my income here, maybe in another post, because the different CoL og tax system would probably confuse some). And in the Mustachian spirit, I'm guessing that my ability to "afford" it will still be questioned (*Braces self for incoming slaps*).
My question is not just which one you would choose, but what kind of minimum speed do you need in order not to be annoyed by it. For now, its just me using the connection.
This is my typical usage:
Streaming music (a lot)
Skype (no video)
Streaming news video (CSPAN, PBS, and the national providers here, some of them have HD)
Working with google docs
Steam (I don't buy games compulsively)
Some very light MMO playing, no competitive shooters
Heavy browsing (20+ windows always open in different browsers)
Sooo.. How horrible would going down to 5Mbit/s be? Has anyone experienced a similar downgrade?
