International food website recommendations
« on: December 09, 2013, 11:59:35 AM »
My husband and I love to go out to eat for international food. We live outside of Boston, so the selection is huge, and the food is amazing. Middle eastern, Indian, and Thai are our particular favorites. I have been trying to replicate some of our favorite stuff at home, and DH has been supportive and helpful, but a lot of times it just can't come close to quality of the restaurant fare.

I know a lot of you mustachians cook from a variety of different cultures, and I was wondering if anyone has an recommendations for websites or blogs that specialize in international foods? I know I can always google certain things and find recipes, but I think maybe some of the smaller blogs that don't come up right away on an internet search could perhaps be more authentic than your typical allrecipes.com and the food network. If you have any favorite sites, especially in the above 3 categories, please post and let me know!

Generally if I am seeking an authentic recipe I try to find one that's written by someone who is either from that country, or someone who is passionate about that particular cuisine and has done their research.

For Thai food, while I haven't tried their recipes, when I read Chez Pim and She Simmers, it sounds like they really know their stuff. Chez Pim doesn't update her blog anymore but the site is still there with a good number of recipes.

For example, see how comprehensive they both are when giving instructions on Pad Thai:

For Indian food, I like http://www.themahanandi.org/. Nowadays, she posts mostly pictures of her garden and religious ceremonies, but her older posts are mostly recipes (organized by ingredient, down the right hand side of the blog). Nice, manageable stuff. Plus she's helped to change my idea of what counts as (a) a meal and (b) a serving. And (c) what people grow in their gardens in Houston.

Binnur's site is really good for Turkish food! I lived in Turkey for a couple of years and use her website all the time. The photography isn't fabulous, but the recipes are spot on and authentic.

For really awesome Tuscan recipes/stories and photography you can't beat Giulia. I was lucky enough to stay at her villa and learn to cook Tuscan dishes from her. Her website is: http://en.julskitchen.com/

I also quite enjoy Taste of Beirut for Lebanese cooking: http://www.tasteofbeirut.com/

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
