Go find a nice, high-end shoe store that has a specialist in shoe fitting and gait analysis (NOT/NOT a podiatrist!!) come in periodically and evaluate people's feet and gait and give recommendations. (If you're in DC or MN, pm me and I'll tell you where, otherwise get on the phone) and find out why you're going through shoes so fast. Because you shouldn't be. He'll suggest some brands and types of shoes that will help mitigate that -- and any other foot/leg/back problems you have. They will not cost $800, but they will last and last and last. Go buy those, either in-store or on eBay. If you really hate to shop and your feet stay the same size, buy 3-4 pairs and keep them in your closet, either on rotation or as replacements when it's time to get rid of the current pair.

Those shoes sound like a bargain...if they are self-propelled.  Otherwise, insane.

Spending more than the $300 or so an AE goes for gets you literally nothing in terms of longevity and durability.
Yep. Above that it's all about aesthetics.

Which is something you're perfectly welcome to spend your money on, if you're so inclined— the higher price goes into paying for more skilled labor, and usually a larger proportion of such labor in first-world countries. Cheap shoes and expensive shoes use pretty similar amounts of natural resources, which our friend MMM is really about reducing use of, moreso than money.

If you enjoy your job and want to use some portion of your income to pay for shoes made by European craftsmen instead of VTSAX, go ahead. Just acknowledge it an expensive hobby rather than an investment.
