Are there any nice Great Lake shoreline communities that are relatively inexpensive for short term visits. It seems that rentals on places like airbnb along the Michigan coast are pretty expensive for the peak summer season. Wonder what areas would be cheaper?

Lake Mi side of state is very expensive (but beautiful) unless you go camping. Lake Huron side less pricey but the lake is rocky. If you can go a little further to the U.P. for Lake Superior there are some decent cabins to rent look near Paradise, very close to Tahquamenon falls, nice state park, beautiful hikes. Lake Erie is affordable either from Canadian side or US side. Lake Ontario is probably cheaper from US side not sure haven't been there in a while. Hope you find something you like! Depends on what you are looking to do.

We love the MN north shore. Grand Marais has pretty affordable cabins. Plenty of them are a random old lady who only takes phone bookings and not until spring, but I'm sure some aren't like that!
We always camp, but I know a friend stays at Nelson's and I think it is less than 100$ a month.

Come to Canada!
I think that you get a 25% exchange rate in your favour right now and some areas have really good deals - check into Manitoulin Island for a destination at low cost with great fishing and cycling. Another popular spot is Prince Edward County with cycle tours, wineries, sand beaches, etc.
Kingston is a great tourist city, really worth stopping by, and reasonably priced. Stop by Old Fort Henry to learn about Canada's (Britain's) answer to the War of 1812 - it could be an eye opener to see a spot where our countries weren't so peaceful but from the other side.
Toronto is expensive, but has some great attractions if you want to see museums, art galleries, and amusement parks. Ottawa should be on your list of you decide to go east.
The North Shore of Lake superior is cheap, remote, wild, & beautiful. Lake Superior Prov. Park is lovely, so is Pancake Bay PP.

We spend lots of time along lake Michigan and I wouldn't consider it expensive. I think you can find something for just about every budget.
One of my favorite little towns is Elk Rapids. Nice beach, you can walk everywhere, several nice restaurants, access to chain of inland lakes or lake Michigan, etc.

I think anywhere along the Superior coast in the UP would be nice. I loved Grand Marais, MI, but didn't get to spend much time there, so I hope to go back sometime. Tiny town, good brewery, sand dunes and other natural features to see. Seemed very quiet, but I was there in September. Driving distance from other wonderful stuff along the coast line.
