incentive units vs options

SO I work for a start up and part of my offer letter included being issued incentive units( non- voting).  since the salary was still market competitive I treated these like monopoly money and ignored them.

Now suddenly I am being told the board, is issuing options in stead.

What is the difference?!

i still think its monopoly money, but i have learned to pay attention to changes coming from 'boards'
