Need Suggestions for Better Tracking in Mint
« on: January 04, 2017, 10:25:07 AM »
Happy 2017 to all! I am re-focusing on tracking all of our spending in Mint, beginning with December 2016.  I have been using Mint for about 2 years now, but have some quirks that make it difficult to use.

Issue 1: We have a Target credit card that we use to get the 5% discount and immediately pay off.  I have this card linked to Mint, but transactions seem to always appear in duplicate.  Would you suggest eliminating the feed from the Target card to Mint and instead entering the transaction manually? Any other tips?  We use Target for groceries, house stuff, etc. and want to get an accurate picture of what we are spending.

Issue 2: We have a credit card that we use for pretty much all purchases.  It is associated with our bank (i.e. we log in to our bank account to make payment, view transactions, etc.).  The individual transactions from the credit card will not load to Mint.  I can see when payments are made but not each transaction.  Any suggestions for this?

I have searched the Mint Help section with these issues but have not had any luck.  Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I would contact Mint customer service on both of these issues.  They take FOREVER to get back to you but when they eventually do, someone will fix your problem.  I had a CC that wasn't compatible with mint.  I sent them an email and around six months later, I had forgotten about it, and out of the blue, I got an email saying they had fixed it, and lo and behold, mint now accepted the card.

On to your specific problems, I don't know why the target card would show up duplicated.  Is there anything you can change in your preferences of how it displays on target's site?  I'm not sure if that would effect how mint receives the data or not, just throwing an idea out there. Since you seem to spend it only on groceries and household items, can you just make that one budget item to track called groceries/household, and then remove the target card, but designate payments from your checking account to the target card to the groceries category?  Its a kludge but better than having your spending all jacked up.

On the second one, there isn't much you can do but contact mint and hope that enough enough users from your bank contact them that it gets added.

Good luck.

I second the suggestion about contacting Mint.

My friend and her husband each had an account where the other was joint on.  In Mint it showed up as 4 accounts.  It took many months but it was finally straightened out.

Is there any reason you are attached to that credit card?  credit cards aren't hard to get and finding one that Mint accepts should be easy. I've never had a problem connecting my cards to Mint. Getting a new card may be the easiest solution to Issue #2

Thanks to all for your input.  I appreciate it.  Frizhand, you make an excellent point that I have been mulling over myself.  I'm going to talk to my spouse this evening about the credit card rewards and (hopefully) pursue a new credit card soon.

We have a card that shows up in duplicate because it's under BOTH our amex accounts- basically, we each have our own AmEx cards, and then I'm an 'official signer' or whatever on one of DH's cards- as a result, it shows up on both. I don't know if there's a similar thing with your target card? Either way, it's easy enough on the desktop site to check "this is a duplicate" since I don't use that card much. No way (that I have found) to mark a duplicate on the mobile app though.

Bracken,

You should be able to turn off or hide one account in the Mint settings. I did this with a bank account that I don't want to include, but that was riding along with my checking account during updates.

It hides the other cards too if I do this. =\ So it turns of ALL my AmEx cards then.

I'm just lucky my Mint is working again. We lost ALL our data last fall, because our bank accounts are linked (individual-joint-individual), and it was triple counting stuff and screwed up and locked everything down. They tried fixing it for months before telling us just to delete everything and add only the joint =(

I also recommend talking to MINT about this. Sometimes you can get results using their chat feature, other times you have to wait. Another thing to check on those with issues on the duplicates is to actually fix it on the CC side. MINT pulls the data using your login info for the bank, so if you don't want to see certain accounts on your login you can call the bank and have them adjust so it will fix MINT. I had to do this on a B of A account where my wife is setup as a signer on her mom's account and it was pulling MILs info into MINT too instead of just my wife's B of A credit card. Once I got B of A to only show her account on her login the issue was resolved in MINT.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
