Title: I need a new credit card
Post by: Gin1984 on July 18, 2014, 01:34:47 PM
I am just switching daycares from one that costs $244/week to one that costs $180-$190 (will go up to $190 when our income goes up) but they only accept visa, mastercard and discover.  Our old daycare took AMEX and I always paid with my FIA AMEX which gave 2% back into my retirement account.  This means $720 will be on this new card per month.  Does anyone have any good cash back cards?

I'm thinking of getting this one myself: http://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/quicksilver-cash-rewards/ (http://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/quicksilver-cash-rewards/)

1.5% cash back on everything

$180/wk * 12 weeks = $2160 in 3 months.

I'd look at a Visa or Mastercard that offers a reward for making a certain amount of purchases in your first 3 months.  Consider the Chase Sapphire Visa which gives you 40,000 points for spending $3000 in the first 3mo.  You may need to put some of your other bills onto the card to hit the limit but it's definitely worth it!  (But beware of the annual fee which is waived in year 1.)

Huh, online they only have $100 for $500 but I'll check my mail and see if I have any decent offers, thanks!

Blackomen is talking about the Chase Sapphire Preferred.  It's similar to the "normal" sapphire, but with a few extra benefits combined with an annual fee.

Thanks!  Quick question, has anyone turned in this points for cash?

Priceline Visa gives 2% back on everything.  I have it, and as a plus, I have the design with William Shatner on the card.

Yes.  It's 1 cent = 1 point, although you do get a bonus for travel if you use their site to book (I've seen the same prices available on other booking sites).  However, I've gotten much more value out of transferring their points to other programs, such as frequent flyer programs, where I've gotten several times the value that I used to get by getting cash.

If you're not adverse to Fidelity, and prefer $ to points/miles,  this is another great card.

Strange:

Earn 5,000 bonus points after your first purchase
Earn 5X points on Priceline.com purchases
Earn 1 point on everything else
Plus, earn an additional 5,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on qualifying transactions in the first 90 days of account opening
Your points can act like cash - Redeem points for statement credits against purchases made on your account
No limit to the number of points you can earn
Please see terms and conditions for complete details

I am reading this as 1% back.

+1

If I didn't have my Barclaycard Arrival Plus World Elite MasterCard, this is the card I get. I like having something that gives me more than 1% back on everything. I use my Chase Freedom and Discover It cards for their 5% back categories and my Barclaycard Arrival Plus for everything else. If it weren't for the fact that my wife and I plan to travel a lot, the Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards would be ideal because there is no annual fee.

Whoops, my bad.  You guys are right.  Looks like they changed it to 1% and I was grandfathered in.  Carry on.

LOL, that is the AMEX referenced in the OP.  As I said in OP, my new daycare does not take AMEX.

It all depends on how complicated you want to make it.

If you're willing to do a little bit of legwork you can easily get 5% cashback to offset your daycare costs (plus much more)

This would involves several steps.

1. Apply for a credit card that gives you 5% cashback at drugstores.(The Amex blue Cash preferred, Wells Fargo rewards card, in TD Ameritrade cards come to mind.)

2. use that credit card to buy $2000 worth of moneypak cards at your local drugstore. (5-6% Cashback - 1 % purhase fee. )

3. Apply for an Isis serve card.

4.  Load the moneypaks on to your Isis serve card.

5.  Write a check to your daycare from your Isis serve account, or transfer the money from your Isis serve account to your bank and just auto pay from your bank account.

For a better feel on the numbers please see here:

(If you don't want the hassle the capital one may be your best bet. )

PNC Cashbuilder gives 1.25%-1.75% depending on what kinds of other accounts you have with them.

There's a different Fidelity Investment Rewards card that's a Visa but is only 1.5%.
