I received quite a good job offer but I am hesitating. I’ve never quit a job that I didn’t just despise.
You guys always offer such great objective advice I thought I would throw it out here. Here is the skinny:
Current Gig
Positives: Have already proven myself and now have a lot of autonomy from my boss. Laid back atmosphere. Love the team I work with. Hourly pay. Office with own bathroom (whoohoo).
Negative: Underpaid. No 401K match. Partially in charge of marketing (yuck). Unless there is a lot of impending change I don’t know about, there isn’t any promotional opportunities. Getting pretty boring with a lot of downtime.
New Offer
Positive: $8000.00/yr raise in salary, 2-4 more days of PTO, $75/mo phone allowance, potential $2,900/yr bonus. 401K match up to $1000/yr. Challenging. Promotional opportunities.
Negative: No office. Will not be able to travel by bike, but mileage paid. Stricter hours & less autonomy.
Unkowns: Team seems nice, but you never know. New boss - possible micromanager but can’t tell for sure. Salary could be a good thing or a bad thing, but it seems like my boss works long hours.
I think I am also partial to my current job because I was able to come in and turned the place around. The first year I was here was awful. We have come along way and it feels hard to give that up no matter how boring it's becoming. I almost feel protective over it! Plus, I've been reading through the forums and there is a lot of advice to keep jobs that you don't hate, lol.
We are in our mid-30's and beside rental property and normal retirement things, we just really started our own FIRE program. This raise could really help.

Everything is a risk. You are trading dead end, but comfortable, for a bit more money with better potential.
Why only an 8K raise (assuming that is gross)? Is that a market rate for what you do? What percentage increase does that represent? Have you had any other offers?

The raise will be about a 15% salary increase vs. my annual 1% due with my current job this month. The job market is still tough around here. I have not had any other offers.

Do it. A 15% raise, even after taxes and so on, will be solid. You can take the difference and max out your IRA, or whatever.
In most places, the only way you'll get a significant raise is to switch jobs. You want more money and more responsibilities and that's worth a lot more than just liking the place where you work... as long as you don't hate the new job, of course.

You can have another chat with the boss to find out if she's really a micromanager and what kind of hours are expected from you. But the truth is, you probably really do want to take this job or else you wouldn't have posted here. So just do it. It sounds like you're bored at your current job, which means you'll probably want to leave in a year or two anyway. You might as well do it now while you have a good offer. Let us know what you decide!

Congrats on the new job offer! I'm with the others and say take it! Something that might make you feel better, which you probably already know: Leave your current job on good terms. Won't be hard at all since you have a good reputation there. Then, if the other job isn't as great, you wouldn't feel stuck there. I think having this thought in mind will help you not be scared about the unknowns of the new job.

Take it and as someone else said dont burn the bridge where your currently at. Who knows maybe they will offer you something to not go but dont hold your breath for that.

I have found the best way to raise my income is to switch jobs....I'm in IT, so it may be different for you, but I would always leave for a $10,000 or more raise. A couple of times, my current company would counter the offer. So you never know....your current may counter the offer. However, I think the 401K vs no 401K is a pretty significant consideration.

It seems to me by reading between the lines that you're open to a new gig but the current offer is just not what you are looking for in a job. I say keep looking and run as far away as possible from micro managers.

Ask for a raise at your current employer. Tell them you got another offer and you would like them to match it. This can help you get a sense of how much they truly value you. If they aren't willing to match it, definitely give notice. Even if they do match it, continue looking for other opportunities with promotion potential.

I would be hesitant to take a job with less autonomy.

Thanks for thinking of me frugaliknowit, I needed to read those questions.
So I think I will talk to my boss on Monday and tell her about the job. I half-way hope she'll have something to offer me but unfortunately I don't think there is any room for advancement here. That leaves me with taking the new job. Logically I can’t really pass up the raise and new experience. Again, I have NO experience in leaving a job I don’t freaking hate. *Deep breathe* I’ll let you guys know how it turns out …
