Spring Break Vacation Ideas MMM Style

We are starting to think about spring break this year. For the last forever years, we've stayed home. We'd like to venture out. Our big family trips are in the summers, alternating between extended family on my side and my husband's side. We'd like to plan something this spring with just our little family (2 adults, 2 kids). Our summer family trip won't be cheap so the spring break trip needs to be.

Would love some suggestions.

Here are the ground rules:

1. Driving only. And it can't require total time in the car in excess of 8ish hours broken up over two days. (I have severe back problems and can't sit for more than 4 hours a day.)

2. Something overly outdoorsy (camping in tents/backpacking through wilderness) isn't possible, but walking is fine.

3.  I'd prefer there be something of educational significance for my 8 and 10 year old to enjoy.

4. We wouldn't mind enjoying local cuisine a few times but most meals should be able to be prepared at home (wherever that may be - hotel, apt, etc.)

5. We'd prefer to be within walking distance of the entertainment or attractions.

6. Would love to get out of Texas.

Where do you live? Texas is a big place and 8 hours might not get you out of there!

Arizona and New Mexico and well, Mexico, have many places to visit.  I have driven through TX, forever, so where you live makes a difference.  Eastern AZ is eclectic: desert and high pine country.  Grand canyon may be too far to drive.  North eastern AZ is beautiful as is is much of New Mexico.  My bias is to those areas so others (because of my exposure) to the east may be equally fun, and if you live in eastern TX, there is a lot of fun that direction too.  TX is a pretty amazing and eclelctic state. Where do you live?

I second that, though if you haven't already explored it, why drive through NM to get to AZ. NM is awesome. You may be restricted to lower elevations that time of year due to snowfall, but there is still plenty to do and see. Don't forget some of the iconic places like Carlsbad Caverns National Park. You might also consider seeking out historic locations, such as ancient cliff dwellings, if trying to capture educational significance as well as natural wonder.

Looking east, I too am of little help...maybe some kayaking in Louisiana?
