hybrid FIRE. Seasonal Living!
« on: May 29, 2022, 08:13:42 AM »
Hi there! :)

"seasonal living", this is how I call it, in short will be living for 9 months in your home country, and abroad for 3 months.

How would you estimate FIRE for this kind of living? Making calculation for the 9 months in your home country, would be pretty easy, but what about the 3 months abroad?

In the 3-months away, your costs in the home country would probably not be zero.  If you own a residence there would still be some utility, insurance and tax costs, and possibly costs associated with outsourced maintenance done in your absence.  If you rent a residence those costs would be ongoing or there would be a cost of moving and storage during away 3-months away.

I would do the SWR calculation based on an annual budget calculated by my costs for year-round living my home country then adjusted by the perceived savings (if planning to spend 3-months in much lower cost countries) or incremental expenses (if going to higher cost countries).

I plan to do the same thing. I was just going to call it travel because I will be paying rent elsewhere on top of my own residence just like I would to pay for a hotel for a few days, just longer.

You need to research the cost of the lifestyle you want in the country/ countries you want to visit.

Are you looking to stay in hotels? Hotels? short term rentals? Trendy neighborhood in a big city or rural and quiet?

How much internal travel do you want to do?

Do you want to eat out or learn to cook with local ingredients?

I teach community college and get a little more than 3 months off during the summer. We pretty much travel the entire 3 months. We have been doing it since 2015. It seems like it usually ends up being an extra 5K above our normal spending across those 3 months.
