How do you pick between two jobs?
« on: October 17, 2016, 03:35:40 PM »
I'm at a cross roads at the moment. My current contract is ending, so I definitely need to pick one of two jobs that are not my current job. They are both in the same division of the company I currently work for, so the benefits are the same (still trying to find out the salaries of both, but they will probably be similar). I just want to hear your thoughts on what aspects I could look at to try to decide which one to take. Here's a rough break down:

1) First job is very different from what I do now. It's open ended work where I will be figuring out specs the client wants and helping create a system that can handle future work. From what I understand, there's already a rudimentary system being considered, so I'm not coming in on the ground floor, or anything. But, there's still a lot of uncertainty there. Most likely I would do this job until the contract ends (or until I leave the company) and then go on to something else.

2) Second job is similar to what I do now. There is a definite hierarchy in place and I know the work. There will be a few things I need to learn, but it will be pretty straight forward with well-defined goals and workflow. In this job, I'd want to move up the management ladder and advance as quickly as I can. I already know the work, so I'm confident I can advance. I'm just not sure they'll advance me as quickly as I'd like.

I have to make my decision by this Friday. My history is: I get bored quickly. I'm definitely bored now, so I'm glad I have this new start to look forward to. Whenever I've been presented with a new opportunity, I take it. That means I steer toward #1. But, I also am tired of being the low man on the totem pole and I want to get more responsibility. #2 seems to offer a better chance of that.

What else would you want to consider between the two jobs in order to decide which one to take?

Take job 1 - if you're bored now, job 2 will make you crazy.  And don't forget that your experience in your CURRENT CONTRACT makes you more valuable to the division if only that you understand the business, its goals, and can predict ways to improve based on your previous work experience.  You might also look outside your current company to see if there are any interesting positions up for grabs - network via LinkedIn to see what's available.

Here's an update (thanks for the input Mother Fussbudget!)

I was definitely leaning toward job 1. However, right before I went to interview for job 2, I got... a third job offer. It came completely out of the blue from a manager who had seen my resume for job 2. It turned out to be a better job than both job 1 and job 2! Of course, I accepted that offer and I started two weeks ago. I'm so happy to have something I actually enjoy! I know I probably would have been okay with job 1, but I wouldn't have been truly happy.

And the Universe stepped in.  Sometime's Karma's a bitch, but sometimes it comes through in our favor.

Congratulations!  VERY GLAD to hear everything worked out!
