Humans of New York Fundraiser- Hair on fire debt/slavery
« on: August 17, 2015, 02:33:19 PM »
Mods, please move or delete if not allowed.  (If not allowed, sorry, I had to at least try...)

Anyone familiar with Humans of New York?  The photographer behind it has been elsewhere in the world recently.  In addition to doing what he normally does in NY, he has been raising awareness (and funds) for a worthy cause, the problem of bonded labor use in brick kilns in Pakistan.

Bonded labor, basically combines predatory lending practices with slavery to trap people into a lifetime of unpaid labor.  Basically it is like payday loans on steroid-like-interest-rates without human rights.  Terrible.

I am not a huge philanthropist, but I did donate a small amount, because this is so horrific, and I encourage others to do so.  Today is the last day of the campaign:

Wow!  When I contributed yesterday it was just breaking $500K.  Also, it looks like the donation page is still live, even though I read on the HONY fb page that yesterday was the last day.

It really is a fascinating project.

I know I have read of lots of folks that found themselves in debt to varying degrees, but have since climbed out of it.  I can hardly imagine how defeating it must feel to have your entire life, and your children's lives and futures, stolen because of a $50 loan taken to help with a family member's medical bills.

Thanks anyone who read this and donated!
