How/where do you buy a used iPhone and not get screwed?
« on: July 31, 2018, 01:54:35 PM »
Family needs a new iPhone and hear a lot of buying used which includes a lot of stories getting screwed (not unlocked, water damaged, whatever).  What is the best way or sites to go about this?

Ebay.  Reputable buyer with good ratings.

Ebay is extremely buyer-biased.  If you get screwed, you can get your money back pretty easily.

I bought a refurbished iPhone 6s for AT&T from Walmart two months ago for $189 and so far, so good. Yep, Walmart now sells refurbished electronics.

I got my used 6s from Apple. Came with a 1 year warranty. No problems 18 months out.

i've had numerous good buys off swappa and gazelle.  swappa is cheaper, but you deal with people, not a company like gazelle.

I've had two different experiences with Gazelle, one good and one bad.

The Good Experience -- I purchased a used iPhone 6, unlocked, that was listed as Excellent. The phone was pristine and haven't had any problems at all. Been using it for 3 years.

The Bad Experience -- Spouse purchased a used iPhone 6, unlocked, that was listed as either Good or Fair (can't remember). Within 3 months the battery inside expanded and pushed the screen off. When I took it to an Apple repair location they informed me that the screen as after market and, in order to do the repair, they would have to put on a genuine Apple screen for $349 dollars. No other repair place would touch it. We ended up doing the repair ourself with the same aftermarket screen.
