How To Find The Right Career
« on: November 01, 2018, 01:43:05 PM »
Hello, this is my first time coming across this site, I found out about it while reading "Tribe of Mentors". I need some help on where to go next as I feel stuck. I currently have a good job (I work in radio as I have for the past 20 years) with great benefits, the pay is good, I'm completely happy at home with my wife and 1-year-old daughter. My problem is I want to do something else, I feel like I've gotten as far as I can with my current career, it doesn't excite me like it once did and the industry itself is getting worse, not better. I've always had an entrepreneurial mind and would love to start my own business, I just don't have that great idea yet. I feel like I am meant to do so much more than I currently am, I want to make a difference, I like helping people and I want to do something with my life that has purpose and meaning. At the same time, I want to have enough money to provide for my family and have health insurance to make sure they're taken care of. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful to hear from you. Just knowing there is a forum like this is a great relief and I'm glad I found this site.

Without seeing numbers of salary, potential pay cut starting a new career.... I'd look into something outside of work to fix that "make a difference" you are currently missing at your current job.  It sounds like you have a good steady job.  I would make sure I had a firm game plan before dropping it.

But, maybe you are close enough to FI that you no longer depend on a big salary?

I definitely need to keep the income coming in (as well as the benefits) at this time. I'm also doing some side hustling (uber eats, door dash etc.) to try and get rid of the rest of our debt and be able to have the FI to go in a different direction. I've been thinking about becoming a real estate agent as well as that seems like a good fit for me. Does anyone have tips or advice on that career path?
