Title: How to find local garage gyms?
Post by: DTown on December 05, 2013, 10:53:12 AM
I need to figure out a gym arrangement that has barbells and a squat rack to meet my fitness goals. There are a few big gyms between work and home, but none of them are ideal for various reasons. I have semi-temporary living arrangements so I don't consider building my own home gym an option (at least not with a full rack setup).

Has anyone made arrangements with someone nearby to use their home gym? I'm really just looking for a hole-in-the-wall place with basic powerlifting or olympic lifting equipment. Should I be concerned about zoning problems? How would I find places like this?

No one is going to let you use their home gym unless they know you, because of the liability issues. Your best bet is to build your own (squat racks are portable, if heavy, and you can also do about 19 varieties of squats without a full rack), or put an ad on craigslist asking if you can come to an arrangement with someone who has a home gym. Maybe they're looking for a workout partner to spot them or something? Worth a shot.

Good point on the liability issue - I hadn't thought of that.

I checked out the local powerlifting gyms. They look awesome and have exactly what I want, but none of them are near my office-home commute. It was worth a look. I think I'll just get a membership at the nearby 24 Hour Fitness. It's relatively inexpensive at $30/mo and has most of what I care about. It's also on the way to work (bicycle distance), which is very convenient. I just hope it's not too crowded.

Thanks for the suggestions!

One thing you might want to check on if you have personal insurance is if the insurance company has an incentive for a gym. With my plan the insurance company will pay $20/month direct to the gym so long as I check in there 12 times in the month. This has the added advantage of giving me a financial incentive (in addition to the usual physical incentive) to go to the gym and the insurance company has lower costs from a more fit person.

Just as a footnote to the conversation, there is a case on point with this out of Maryland - APA v. Cotillo. Where a voluntary participant in a sports activity suffers an injury that is a foreseeable risk of participation, in that activity, his claim is barred by assumption of risk.

Liability is not as big of an issue with this sort of thing, as the presumption with powerlifting is not if but when you get your first surgery (haven't had mine yet wuwu). I'm not sure if Colorado is more Texas or California, so YMMV clearly.
