Is My Coffee UnMustachian?
« on: July 09, 2018, 12:19:19 PM »
Yesterday I paid $8.99/lb for some really good locally roasted whole beans that I coarse ground right in the store for my french press. I feel like 9 bucks a pound is right on the edge of becoming a luxury item, but the cheap mass marketed coffee really doesn't taste good.

So, my question is, how much are you willing to pay for coffee beans before you feel like you are waxing your mustache?

I find the 3lb bags of coffee from Costco to be really high quality, and they usually around $16-$17/bag under the label "San Francisco Bay" and the French Roast is my favorite.  That's about how much I am willing to pay per lb for high quality whole bean coffee.

Anything above the price of tap water is unmustachian..../s

I usually pay 12-16$/lb for coffee from some local roasters.  I get free coffee at work so I only make coffee on the weekend, but a lb will last me about 4-5 weeks.  If I am making coffee I want to enjoy it.  It's worth it to me to spend a few extra dollars.

I don't drink coffee, but I'm a big tea drinker. I once in a while buy a fancy box of imported green tea from Japan (the green tea they make here in America doesn't taste the same) for like $5/20 bags.

I don't drink Japanese matcha because that stuff is EXPENSIVE. I bought myself some as a special treat last year, the lower class "cooking grade" type that is more for putting in cookies and cakes rather than drinking. The "cooking grade" tends to run $15-20 per ounce (depending on brand) and the "ceremonial grade" (the drinking kind) tends to run more like $25 per ounce.

I do ask myself this, because DH and I drink almost a whole pot of coffee every day. In your case, OP, the almighty internet tells me 1lb of coffee makes ~32 8oz cups so your cost is $0.28 per cup (plus the cost of heating water, but that's negligible). Compared to even the cheapest gas station coffee, that's not bad at all. I wouldn't call that luxury level spending. Now, if you start buying the beans picked out of cat droppings...

I would say "yes", it's unmustachian, but we all have priorities.  That's the price I pay for beans that I like by the pound at the grocery store.  I've tried cheaper (Aldi brand, for example), but it just doesn't do it for me!

Coffee is non-negotiable. The mustachianism comes in via hunting down the best deal:)

I once had a job where the company owner was Columbian - best coffee ever:)

I wouldn't necessarily measure it per pound or even per serving.  What does that work out to per week? Per year?

It is a daily habit of 1-2 cups. I think the cost per pound is still relevant. I'm happy to save money wherever I can, even if it is only ~$100/yr.

Have you ever tried roasting your own beans at home?  For a few years now I've been buying raw/green beens at the local brew-and-grow shop for about $4 per pound.  The store even gives me a discount when I buy 20 pounds at a time. Beans don't begin to go stale until after they are roasted, so raw beans in bulk is the way to go. It then takes me about 15 minutes to roast a pound of the beans on my stovetop, which I do once or twice a week, making my house smell like a nice coffeeshop.  The quality is very high as well.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
