Career advice needed?
« on: June 22, 2019, 06:57:24 AM »
OK, so when you ask Mustachians for career advice, how does it go?

I have been a dabbler for several years while my kids are growing up. The youngest is now going into 5th grade.

I was working as a recess supervisor at my son's elementary school, but needed to leave that job due to a conflict.  Everything is on good terms there, there are no issues.

Plan A was to do some freelance writing.  The deal is $100 per article written.  Figure I am slow and an article takes 10 hours right now.  If I do well, I will get promoted and make more money per article + traffic bonuses, details unknown, but I know people who do this as their primary gig.  What I have written so far is good, but I am struggling to keep writing every day and stick to it - many distractions. I have some imposter syndrome issues and struggle with feeling like I can do this well. The organization is fantastic.

Plan B is to apply for other school jobs in other districts.  I have applied for two nearby school district library aide jobs.  One is 24 hours a week, which would in theory leave (less) time for writing, and it may mean that I give up on that idea altogether.  The other is 35 hours a week.  Figure these jobs would pay about $15 an hour or a bit more and summers are off (which is good because of my kids).

I don't know what to do.  I have decided that for now I am not applying for other school jobs, but the library jobs are intriguing.  None of these jobs pay full-time money.  They are part-time "extra" money, and not really career type jobs.

So far it's the first week of summer vacation and I have gotten zero writing done. I feel like a major failure in terms of being a mom and being productive.  My husband has the primary bill paying job.   We have a solid 'stache in the making.  I do not want my extra work to just go to taxes.

I guess what I'm thinking is to pick up a school job to make a little money, get out of the house and be around people, and feel productive, be part of a team, etc.  I just don't know, though. The commutes are short enough and that is a priority.

Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

Tagging @La Bibliotecaria Feroz - you know me probably as well as anyone here.

I would apply for the school jobs. You will enjoy being out in the world versus writing at home. I stayed home with my kids and was very happy to rejoin the working world.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
