A relative will be going out of town and wants to hire someone to stay at their home and take care of their high-energy but well-behaved puppy (~7 months old). I have a family friend who is interested in doing this. She loves this breed of dog (her mom has had 2 from puppy-hood) and the house they'll be staying is is much nicer than their apartment. The potential housesitter is between college and grad school right now working a low-wage job. The house is only 2-3 miles from her apartment, so she'll be able to continue to work regular hours. This trip will be about 5 days.
This seems like a perfect situation, but I am not sure how much to pay the house sitter. While I'm not the one who needs the sitter, I'm involved because I choose to help this person financially and I made the offer to cover this expense so they could take the trip. Is $100 a day reasonable?
I found a 24-hour "Concierge Pet Sitter" who charges $200 / 24 hours, but the assumption there is that the dog is recovering from surgery and needs full-time care. I also found a site saying the typical cost for a 5-day stay ranges from $250-375 for one pet with no special needs. I found another site that says they charge $55-60 / day, while another says that if you find someone for under $150/day you're getting a great deal.
I really don't want to rip off the family friend, so I'm willing to pay a higher rate to make sure they don't feel taken advantage of.
