How much to pay a house/dog sitter?
« on: March 26, 2021, 05:23:37 PM »
A relative will be going out of town and wants to hire someone to stay at their home and take care of their high-energy but well-behaved puppy (~7 months old).  I have a family friend who is interested in doing this.  She loves this breed of dog (her mom has had 2 from puppy-hood) and the house they'll be staying is is much nicer than their apartment.  The potential housesitter is between college and grad school right now working a low-wage job.  The house is only 2-3 miles from her apartment, so she'll be able to continue to work regular hours.  This trip will be about 5 days.

This seems like a perfect situation, but I am not sure how much to pay the house sitter.  While I'm not the one who needs the sitter, I'm involved because I choose to help this person financially and I made the offer to cover this expense so they could take the trip.  Is $100 a day reasonable?

I found a 24-hour "Concierge Pet Sitter" who charges $200 / 24 hours, but the assumption there is that the dog is recovering from surgery and needs full-time care.  I also found a site saying the typical cost for a 5-day stay ranges from $250-375 for one pet with no special needs.  I found another site that says they charge $55-60 / day, while another says that if you find someone for under $150/day you're getting a great deal.

I really don't want to rip off the family friend, so I'm willing to pay a higher rate to make sure they don't feel taken advantage of.

I'm sure that there is huge variation in pay for this from one geographic area to another.

Where I live, there is plenty of competition and a dog can be boarded for <$50 a day, so this seems to keep the "in home" pet care costs on the reasonable side. So find out what it costs to board a dog, then offer her a little more? Here, I'd probably offer her $50 a day plus an offer to chillax at my place and please eat any food that she would like from the cupboards or fridge.

Then make sure you contact her every single day to see how the dog is doing. I emphasize this because my friend once had a dog sitter completely forget. He never checked in with her and came home from a long weekend away to find his dogs nearly dead in their crates . . . and it was a big mess, obviously. Poor pooches! He was mad at her, but I think he shares some of the blame for not checking in.

Here boarding is about 35$/day. I'd expect to pay 100$+ a day for a service to do in home, but 50-75$ a day for a friend.

I think $100 is generous, given that she will be gone at work a lot of the time.

I'm in Florida. Our pet sitter (a registered vet tech who left working in practice to start her own mobile service doing pet sitting, nail trims, fluids, etc.) charges $20/visit for pet sitting and comes over 3x/day for our dog and 2 cats.

My pet sitter who comes and stays in my house charges $35/night (same when it was 2 dogs and a cat). I am in Houston. She charges less but most people are around $45-50 from what i have seen on rover.com. Maybe check rover to see the going rate but $100/day unless they are with the pet nonstop seems high. My sitter would just go to her work during the day (similar to how my schedule is).

Do you live in a place that is a popular destination for travelers and tourist? If so, you might be able to swap house sitting for a free place to stay with just a nominal fee.  There are several places that connect house sitters with people looking for the service. Here is a link to one of them

Now that I am retired, I have been considering house sitting as a way to slow travel and see the country.

Thanks all!  I suggested $60 / day and she said that's about what she was thinking.
