Careers in Personal Finance
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:10:24 AM »
Hey everybody!

For years I've had an interest in personal finance. Right now I'm teaching English abroad and saving some money. When I get back to the US, I'll basically be starting from scratch in whatever career I decide. I've been looking at careers in personal finance, but I'm unsure on the qualifications I'll need to actually get hired.

I like the idea of a personal financial adviser, but I think I would need to go back to school for that, and I really don't want to go back into debt. I've also been looking into becoming a debt counselor. The certification isn't that expensive, but I wonder if that will be enough to get a job with a decent employer.

So my questions are - Is anyone here employed as a personal financial adviser/debt counselor? What are the ups and downs of the industry? What were your qualifications? Are there any other similar jobs that I haven't thought of? I like the idea of helping people pay off their debt and improve their finances. What are some mustachian cities where jobs in this field are available? I'm nervous about going back to the US and diving into a new field, so I'm trying to get as much info as I can.

Thanks!

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
